Goal of sub 17 minute 5k (Read 8206 times)

17:04 this morning in some slop. Damn happy with that.

Damn, dude. All you need now is a decent weather day and dry roads. Nice work.

    Runners run.

Nice Run G-Kevin, looks a cert in the next one...

        Thanks guys, getting there.

And Roth, 1:15 yesterday? Talk about cert...damn!

Come all you no-hopers, you jokers and rogues
We're on the road to nowhere, let's find out where it goes

Good stuff. You're right there at it. Keep it up!

            Indeed.  Very nice.

Figured this one needed a bump...and awesome run for that 17:04!

Anyone got a good race to recommend to go after this? Here's what I'm looking for:

              1) Net flat or net elevation gain (no cheeting by running downhill).

              2) USATF certified (no 3.00 mile courses calling themselves 5ks).

              3) Usually has fast runners show up (I'm not against rabbits).

              4) Isn't stupidly expensive (I'm not paying $50 to run for 17 minutes).

There's a 5000m at the NBB Twilight Meet on 5/11 but my marathon's the next day and the 5000m doesn't come back up in the rotation until meet #4 on 6/8 while I'm in Vegas. If you live near Bentley University these meets might be a good shot at the <17.

Right now, I'm thinking the Salem State Wellness Fair 5k:

              http://www.salemstate.edu/3111.php

But with a smallish race like this there's really no guarantee that a rabbit will show up to lead the way...

Any recommendations for good 5ks in MA (or close to MA) are very welcome!!!

J, I will almost definitely be at the Salem State race, so at least we can work together--but it looks like they usually have a few under 17 there anyway.

The other one I found in April is the NHTI Detlta Dental 5k...only thing is it's in Concord NH on a Friday night, but it's a fast, certified course and almost always has a winning time in the 15s with a few in the 16s. Maybe we could get Mike Q to pace us? http://www.coolrunning.com/results/12/nh/Apr20_NHTIDe_set1.shtml

                Runners run.

Thanks Mike, if you're in for Salem then I'll run it too (or the NH one). Maybe we can get Mike Q, James S and James P all there to lead the way and rope in Bui and EJ (Bash, you going to be healthy by then?) to go after that 17 minute mark too. Hey, a little wishful thinking never hurt...

My club puts this on. Meets all of your criteria. EJ should be there. There will be beer.

Even though I don't think I'm ready for a legitimate sub 17 attempt, I would like to run that one.  But my wife is a bit fatigued on the "racing every Sunday" thing I have going right now and I fully plan to be gone all day for New Bedford the following Sunday so I'm not sure.

Anyone still up for this race http://www.salemstate.edu/3111.php

i was thinking of the james Joyce 10k that day, but kids soccer and baseball schedule doesn't fit with timing. Early 5k would work though.

I'm still planning on a <17 attempt at this one but since it's 2 weeks before my marathon I'm going to try to run just under 17 rather than see how deep into the 16s I can go...there's always Hollis for setting unrealistic PRs.

I've got a 2 mile race tomorrow, setting up for sub 17 attempt in 2 weeks (on a course I know well, and should be fast if the right guys show). Kind of looking forward to letting loose at the short distance tomorrow though - just run.

I'm torn because I've still never run James Joyce and the masters 10k championships is a little extra incentive. But my priority this spring is the 5k so unless something weird happens I'm planning to still run the Salem race.

Maybe this Westfield race was the one to do it at...smoking fast field with 6 under 14:00 and 38 under 17:00! Good to know for next year!
