Apparently this happens often enough that the state legislature had to come up with a law against it.
Whether you report it or not, DEP will give you a bill for $10k for every day your vehicle is submerged and you haven't gotten it out.
And yeah, it is pretty common. 18 inches of ice is more than enough for a full sized pickup truck, 6 inches is more than enough for a snowmobile (which can go over open water if it is at speed) or ATV. Oftentimes, though, one part of the lake has nice thick ice, but another part doesn't, and some morons take their vehicles out before they learn the quirks for their lake or pond. |
