Varsity? (Read 131 times)

    Hello runners,

I'm a male junior in high school looking to achieve varsity in Indoor Track...

Coming off cross country I can run a 5:20 mile, and I have about 4 months of training to get it down to a 4:55 (The time necessary to get Varsity).

Is this a reachable goal? Advice?

    Thanks!

What is your 200 or 400 time.

How long have you been training?

Last year I ran an 400 around 1:00. Not sure about the 200.

In general I've been training for two - three years.

25 seconds in 4 months seems like an awful lot for someone who is alresdy in decent shape. But hey satranger things have happened. All you can do is train hard and see where it gets you.

I saw runners at my son's school make even bigger improvements between XC and Track.

I'd say that if you achieved the 5:20 on little or questionable training, then that jump is very possible if you train. But, even if you're highly trained right now, if you spend the next 2 to 3 months working on both ends of the speed spectrum (avoiding gut busting speed work for a while), it is possible.  Work on stamina and endurance, with just a smattering of all-out short sprints (short hill sprints if you have them) to maintain leg speed and power.
