SMART Approach

Softball has been eating up my legs for last two years with occasional pull and hammy tendonitus last year. Last night I was reaching for a ball at the plate and heard my shoulder GO! Ouch! Evil grin Had a long run planned this morning and a golf tournament this afternoon I was so looking forward to. I cannot run (not because of legs) because the natural pendulum of arm swing while running is simply not possible for me to do without a lot of pain. I cannot golf today (and I am the big hitter on team) and can only chip or putt. I may go for this reason alone because our team will be doing a lot of chipping without me. So, softball has cost me (for the time being) two of the most enjoyable things I do - golf and running. I am optimistic it is nothing major as I can move my arm to the side with little discomfort which is usually impossible with a rotator cuff tear. Certainly could be a torn labrum or cartilage. Also, I slept last night and generally rotator cuff tears of significance mean "no sleep". I have no pain unless I move my arm across body or just hanging. Thank God it isn't my dominant hand. I will wait until Monday. If no improvement, then I am in trouble and will go see one of my ortho friends. I am staying positive because I don't want to spend my summer at the beach Cool rather than on golf course.

I think you have the knowledge/skill to self diagnose, but getting another opinion is a great idea. Get well. (tennis to me is what softball is for you)

      The Greatest of All Time

I think a reasonable test for rotator cuff (supraspinatus) is if you can lift 5 or 10lbs with an extended arm above shoulder level to the front and then to the side. If that puppy is torn you either won't be able to lift the weight or it will hurt like hell. Pretty much all overhead lifting engages the supraspinatus and if it's torn you'll know.

Maine Yeh, shoulder pain would not be good for tennis. Marcus, I think I may have tweaked/strained it. I heard it when it happened. It certainly appears to be at supraspinatus as I press on area right below acromion and I can feel it. BUT, I can lift 5lbs overhead with a bit of discomfort (not pain) and to the side with no problem. What really hurts is just my arm hanging loosely when I deactivate my shoulder muscles and also when I bring left arm across body like when getting reading to load up to swing a baseball bat or swinging a golf club. Also, it does hurt to external rotate it bent elbow position. And pendulum motion of running also hurts quite a bit.

No thanks! Those damn knees. Thank god mine are healthy. I'll also take the shoulder over my past hammy tendonitis/bursitis issues.

Well the real question is...did you win? What position do you play? I pitch for our team and we got to play last night under the lights in the rain. It was an amazing game and we won. Our team name is Off in the Woods.....so fortunately the other team did not beat Off in the Woods.. Big grin But I hear you on the pains from softball. I definitely feel it the next day....upper body is a little sore and the cleats are killer on my shins. But I wouldn't give it up for anything. It is way too much fun.

Miller U must be from Milwaukee. Just watched Prince hit a HR. Well we took the lead 9 to 8 in extra innings but gave up 2 run shot to lose it 10 to 9. Luv softball but it tears me up at age 42. I play shortstop and get a lot of work. I am also lead off hitter on team and fastest runner and most of team in their 20s and 30s. IThink this is my last year after 24 yrs. Hard to give when I still bat .500 and play great defense. Shoulder is a bit better today.

Oh, I can sympathize with you. DH is a softball player too. His legs and feet are wrecked. He's a first base guy. He is big hitter, usually #4 guy, and has had to get a runner this year. He doesn't like it very much, but he can't run (however, does) and/or slide like he used too. The next day he is a little depressed about the age effect that is happening. He is 40. Growing old is hard work. Wink Hang in there Tchuck. Hmm....DH team has gone to Nationals several times. Do you know the Cheerleaders or Outlaws from Bend, OR? It's a long shot, but I thought that I'd check. Tongue

Cherrie Softball is enjoyable for me. I am extremely competitive in a team environment and also vs. myself. I never had opportunity to do sports in HS so I am trying to make up. I really enjoy it but I enjoy running and golf even more. UPDATE: Shoulder is improving some. I ran 4 miles today but had to change my elbow/shoulder position to limit shoulder motion. At least I could get out there. Will try 10 mile long run tomorrow. I do think this will get better but may take a bit of time. I am thinking 2-3 weeks. Will hold off going to doc.

Good to hear that it is improving. Even though it is not a foot or one of your legs, the pain can certainly impact your running. I remember racking up my rib cage many years ago and how painful it was everytime I took a step. If there is anything positive it is that you will return to top running form more quickly once the pain stops than you would if it was one of your "wheels". Good luck on that 10 tomorrow.

Nope...not from Milwaukee...In Duluth, MN now...Tomah, WI originally. It's tough to lead the game then get beat....we almost gave up our game last Thursday. We were up by 6 in the 5th and they came back and were only one point down in the final inning. Luckily we have an amazing pitcher who KO'd one guy and then got the last out of the inning on an infield fly....(oh yeah..that's me) Big grin Glad the shoulder is getting better....I do not look forward to the day that I have to give up softball....I love the game, but I definitely get too wrapped up in the action to remember to take it easy. It's a hard decision if I want to give up softball so I can keep running....I doubt it will happen anytime soon though.
