What do you guys/girls do before you run in the morning?
Eat/drink anything?
What about the night before?
I dont run very far (around 6 miles) and on a treadmill for the time being. But normally I feel best if I eat and drink, wait an hour, then go run...
Thanks for the input!

I don't eat before a run if the run is less than an hour. More than that, I might chew on granola bar as I get dressed.
Like dgrosenberger, I prefer to be running before I realize I am awake. If it's a long run, I'll eat a granola bar and drink half a cup of coffee.

There isnt really a need to eat before runs of that distance. It may or may not put a little spring in your step to do so. It is pretty much a personal preference thing
I definitely eat something before a long run and I tend to eat a tiny bit if I am planning speedwork. I usually will try to make sure I have a decent dinner the night before a long run.
I've recently been experimenting with eating before the majority of my morning runs but from a blood sugar control side, not a running side (I'm insulin resistant). But I can get up, eat a piece of pb toast and coffee and hit the road 5 minutes later without puking.

Poo. You don't want that to happen again to you.
It's not the heat, it's the stupidity.
When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

Bonkin, I hear you... My longer morning runs always include passes by a park or local college with public restrooms. (Shorter runs circle around so I'm always less than a mile from home.)
As to the original poster, I remember reading these questions before since I was new to running in the morning. The general consensus seemed to be eating or drinking nothing except water or coffee. (Exception may apply of course.) I found that to be just fine for me even on longer (>10 mile) training runs.

I agree and generally follow the same pattern.
If we don’t try we’ll never know. At least I can find out how good I can be. I can have an answer at the end of the days, and have a hell of a good time with the process. -Desi Davila
All my runs are early morning.
I drink a cup of coffee, sip a small glass of water and try to ensure that I have visited the toilet before I leave (coffee seems to help with this!!!)
I intentionally run on an empty stomach as this has proved great for stripping unwanted body fat. I think I would struggle to eat anything other than a bite and then run within 30 mins or so, personally.

On those days I wake up a little late and don't have time for the poop, it sometimes hits me during the middle of the run. Makes for a tough run home.
Yea...but it's a good way to get some speed work in

i haven't made a habit of it, but the couple of times i have run in the morning i did "easy" workouts and was fine on an empty stomach. i was really hungry by the time I got back, so if you did anything hard i would probably eat, but i'm also the kind of person who cannot do a long run w/o at least 1 cup of coffee in me.

This includes 20+ mile training runs, as well as weekday 8 - 15 mile runs. The reason this works for me is that I like Low Heart Rate (LHR) training, and my training HR point is at the "deflection point" (MAF?) on the RQ (RER) vs HR curve from my VO2 test, and at that point my body is burning 80% fat and 20% carbs (RQ = 0.76)...
For ordinary training runs, I don't use any carb intake at all (no sport drinks, etc.), just Endurolyte capsules once in a while for electrolyte replacement during the summer when it's warm/hot. Training runs are done with the body in a "fasting" state - no carb intake for 12 hours or more. Races (few and far between) are different - I'll consume sport drink if they have it available along the course, but I still won't have eaten anything since dinner the night before.
FWIW, I remember Marty Liquori saying that he didn't want to have eaten anything for at least 6 - 8 hours before a race. He thought that gave him an edge.
As always, YMMV.
