Well if I actually run my first marathon this year, I hope to do it in under 4:00.  April - July training will tell if I am going to run one.

MTA, July 10 - Grandfather Mountain is my first Chance.

Had to look up Grandfather Mountain...

This marathon begins in Boone, NC at the Appalachian State University on the track at the Kidd Brewer Stadium, home of the 3-time NCAA Division 1 Football National Champions. The marathon then winds through the breath-taking NC Blue Ridge Mountains, over the Blue Ridge Parkway, up long steep climbs to McRae Meadows where you will be greeted by the sound of bagpipes and an estimated 15,000 spectators.

Nothing like picking an easy one for your first marathon, eh?   Not that I can talk... my first marathon was on trail.

Live the Adventure. Enjoy the Journey. Be Kind. Have Faith!

I ran the last 10 miles of that marathon, all uphill.  The bigger problem with this marathon is the few downhills are steep and beat you up more than help.  Also the road is severly cambered and many who have run the marathon complained of IT Band pain.  The reason I picked this is more scheduling related than choice, can make it a family weekend getaway after the race.
I am planning on a sub 4 at the Ottawa Marathon on May 30th.   Have been training all winter and it is looking good at ths point in my training.

I am trying for a sub 4 marathon at the Twin Cities Marathon on October 3rd, 2010!  I am trying to build some base miles including slower runs and hopefully stay healthy with the increase in mileage and running days!  (thanks to all of the great suggestions on RA!)  This will be my third marathon.  My first one was 5:07:00, then 4:32:00, so 3:59:00 would only make sense, don't ya think?

              Thanks for starting this thread!

              Darla

Hoping for sub 4:00 April 25 at Glass City.

Will be my first, so first goal is to survive training uninjured.  Second goal is to finish.  Third goal is sub 4:00!

Do you know the feeling I know? When your legs have disappeared, and there is only your heart, your lungs, and your eyes skimming disembodied through the air? - Jeff

OK then!  We've got some momentum -- AXes, looks like you're first up.

                  No offense.

Make sure to take your ID with you to packet pickup.  And make sure you registered with the exact same name that's on your ID.  I registered as "Robert".  My ID says "Roberto".  After watching the volunteer scan my face and my picture for 10ish seconds to ensure that I'm that person (and my pic looks just like me), they had to have some big internal discussion regarding whether I could have my stuff.

                    Really.

And that was just the first thing.

Challenging race, but very pretty and finishing at the games is fun.

Good luck going sub-4. Lots of people do... and if YOU do, well, you are ready to run a wee bit faster on a more forgiving course.  As for the slanty, I didn't think it was that bad.

                    Ultima tastes like failure.

RRRRRRrrroberto, speaking of slanty, do you think Newport's bad?  I don't remember it being horribly slanty, but other folks have said it was pretty bad.

                        No offense.

Hmmm... I remember it being kind of slanty but not omg slanty.  Plus, because it is an out-n-back, you equalize the load on both sides.  Unlike Yakima.  THAT race is omg slanty and is also a point-to-point.  24ish miles pogo sticking off of one leg.  Everybody loooooooves Yakima.  I run it every year but secretly it is not a fav.  All that said, the last time I ran it was with you (2006? Ahh... youth) so it's been awhile and my brain is foggy.

                          Ultima tastes like failure.

Yes, it's been long enough that I'm going to go run it again (my first marathon repeat!).

Back to the bidness at hand.  I'm going to hit 40 mpw this week.  Yay -- that's what I need to do at the absolute minimum if I want a decent sub-4 marathon.

Hi guys - I think I better join in here as I need to keep myself motivated.  Having been out of the loop for a fair while, I am back in training, and looking forward to breaking 4 hours again it's been far far far too long!

I am, and will be, in Argentina for most of this year, and plan on running my sub 4 here. At the moment, I have three marathons in my sights, the first being in Rosario in June, but I don't expect that one to be sub 4, more a testing ground to get the legs used to the distance again. I will also run a marathon in Uruguay in Early September as a long training run (it's at a beach resort, Punte de Este, so a good excuse for a weekend away), and the main target for the year will be the 10 10 10 Marathon here in Buenos Aires......   That's where I hope to drop under that magic number again.....

Welcome back to the fold, Liam....and be sure to wear your sunscreen there...
