How brave are you when running in a thunderstorm? (Read 3913 times)

Do you bail out of a run when you see lightning? Dam weather, planned 17 today but there was at 4.5 miles, heavy rain, flickers of lightning and I bailed since I was back at my car. Now I wish I had waited it out because now I look at the weather forecast and it doesn't look any better tonight or tomorrow.

I tend not to run in lightning. I have an aversion to being a kind of tall thing in an open space when electricity is looking for ground.

Braver than I should be...I like storms. I went out running in a storm yesterday. It blew through very fast, but it could have been a dangerous situation.

Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to

remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.

I run in snow, sleet, and horizontal rain but at the first sign of lightning I'm off the roads. I once had a bolt of lightning hit a street light that I was walking next to. I actually heard the corona discharge before the strike. It's not an experience that I care to re-visit. Tom

          Feeling the growl again

I run in anything except lightning. If I'm on a heavily forested trail, I'll still run in lightning. Otherwise, I get inside. It's too open around here.

I was fishing one day a Tstorm was approaching. I took refuge under a bridge and abchored. Another guy goes by and says "A storm is coming" I reply "Yeah that's why I'm here". The guy says the bridge is the first thing it'll hit." Well a few minutes later the bridge got whacked and these little flakes of rust started falling down on me. Nervously I pulledup the anchor and motored into the Marina. Laughing, the guy yells over "Curl your hair did it?" I head indoors when lightning is around.

Running in lightning is not what I would call brave. Stupid maybe, but not brave.

I ran a 5K once in a serious storm. So much lightning close by that the local police sent squad cars along the course asking the runners if they wanted a ride to shelter!! Shocked I'm brave in a storm, but apparently not too bright when it comes to lightning, because I refused the ride and finished the race (didn't see anyone else gettin a ride, so I didn't - that kind of mentality - plus, I "rationalized" it by telling myself there was only a mile left to go). Then at the finish, the awards were under a picnic shelter with a metal roof, and it was still storming!

"I don't always roll a joint, but when I do, it's usually my ankle" - unk.         "Frankly autocorrect, I'm getting a bit tired of your shirt".                  I ran half my last race on my left foot!

There are few things better than running long in the middle of a serious thunderstorm, especially when you're miles from nowhere, the air sizzling around you, the static electricity making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, the thunder so close and loud that you can't even hear your own laughing screams of delight ... Okay, so that sounded a little weird. I like storms. Most of the stuff that actually is better than that tends to be illegal. Or on the Internet. Or both. ---------------- It's also very, very stupid. Google "lightning" and "iPod" and you'll find a couple stories about idiots who ended up with their little pods melted into their ears. But, hey, you gotta go sometime. There are lots of worse ways to go.

I had a run like this about a month ago. A 6 miler...2 miles from home and the end of my run a storm developed out of nowhere...so I arrived home soaked and feeling really invigorated. A woman stopped her car when I was about a mile from home and asked if I wanted a ride. I declined...I figured, hey, what better excuse for a mile of fast running? And I didn't really want to set my drenched and sweaty body in her new car, either.

My wife and I just went on a rainy run the other night. I got done with softball and was already soaked so I figured what the heck. It was raining pretty hard and the thunder was pretty loud but I did not see any lightning. I think if there was lightning when we started I probably would have turned around but I run loops so if I were home I would just pickup the pace and get home. One good thing that came out of that rainy run was that no one else was around and I got to see a little fawn. Couldn't have been more than a few days old. The doe and fawn were just walking up the street in a residential area. I slowed down and when I got close enough she took off into a yard but the little one just stood on the side of the road and watched me. I stopped and talked to him a little bit and could of grabbed him if I really wanted to. Cute little things when they aren't running in front of your car.

Running in the rain? Good stuff. Running with lightning? No way. I don't want to be out there with lightning. Not worth it!

The only time I ran in lightning was when a storm came out of nowhere. I have to say that was the only time I've run up that last big hill to my home - really fast. It is usually my cool down to walk up the hill, but I make exceptions when motivated, and the thought of getting flash-fried on asphalt is quite a motivator! Laker

Bugs, this is so funny. Look at my log from yesterday. I bailed. It was the best run- just pouring. The kind of rain where you're soaked in about a minute. It was about 70 degrees and humid, so it felt great. I didn't stray too far from the car incase I had to bail and glad I did. I got goosebumps when I saw lightning, so I was in the car in a heartbeat. It was great up until that point.
