| Quote from zoom-zoom on 5/12/2008 at 2:47 PM: But if I didn't run the tangents exactly I *did* run it, right? Don't most people end up running a bit further in any race, particularly if they are dodging other runners at spots on the course?
Elevation correction almost always adds a little bit to my runs, especially if I run a route with more hills. I'd bet that the Nashville folks log extra distance from that all the time.
By this rationale, I ran an ultramarathon already, because I actually doubled back on a race course, and KNOW that I ran more than the race distance. Wanna know how it's recorded? 26.2 miles. That's it.
I'll tell ya, USATF doesn't care one iota what you THINK you ran on a certified course. They only care what the course says, and what the clock/chip says. That's it.
I've never used elevation correction. Because it don't much matter.
Again, you're getting wrapped up over a piddly number because you had a crappy race, for many reasons. And you're using this .29 to justify it. Whether you put it in as a separate entry or not, that's what you're doing.
Have you EVER done this before? Then why start now? |

Zoomy, FWIW, a 25k is ~15.53 miles (15.53427980593 to be a little more exact), so your extra distance is really only ~0.26 miles. When I race a metric distance, I enter it in the log in metric units for accuracy (Eric's log is more than smart enough to total it up correctly). Enter 25 kilometers into your log rather than 15.5 miles for more accurate pacing. As for the extra 0.26, it's your log, so do what you will.
Quote from MissPratt on 5/12/2008 at 2:15 PM:My issue is that I feel like I paid so much $$$ for a device that obviously is not accurate, more often than not.
In the case of the example here (15.79 Garmin vs a 15.53 race course), that's a discrepancy of only 1.66%. I'd say the device is obviously plenty accurate enough. And I imagine that due to tangents and what not, 15.79 is probably very close to what she actually covered, so the Garmin's doing its job well here.
And JK is right, the "instantaneous" pace is not very reliable, and it's better to use lap pace. The reason for this is that it's basing your distance traveled on only a few data points very close together. Garmin claims "<10m 50%, typical" meaning under typical conditions, it will be accurate within 10m half the time. When you try to calculate pace of a few data points close together, 10m error will make a big difference, and since pace is time/distance, the error will be glaring for short values of distance.
Lap pace is squirrelly at the start of the lap, when you've only traveled a short distance (for the same reasons mentioned about, but I find after about 0.2mi, it starts to stabilize b/c by that point, GPS accuracy is less significant. |

| Wow. Scout and Globule posted at exactly the same time, making that weird thing happen when a thread shows up twice in the list. I guess that blows my theory that they are actually the same person. |

I used to use the current pace setting and almost always found that what it read for pace whenever I'd glance down was a lot slower than what I was actually running--like a minute or more/mile...and jumped all over the place (though it is kind of fun when doing hill workouts on the downhill...whoo hoo, look at that, 6mm! ). I switched to lap pace and the 1 mile autolap and it's spot-on, for the most part.

So HA!
I've been exposed - not that streaking through a forum is the same as the real thing but I digress.
I fully understand Zoom's POV. I don't have a garmin (yet - its due to arrive tomorrow - happy happy joy joy) so I just count miles based on best guess from web mapping, car miles, bike odomoeters, and the like. Having something that precise is nice to help train and improve if you're still building bases and reaching new goals - you want to be somewhat certain in having attained these milestones. And hey, its fun to pass 40mpw or 50 mpw or whatever the goal is and know you did it and not have to guess.
Generally speaking, I am a big fan of +/- and things working out in the long term. .29 long today is .29 short next week. Call me a laize faire technogeek.
I don't count warm up or cool down distance. Is that good form? |
