Yesterday in gym class, my 1st grader (6 y/o) ran his very first mile. I'm so proud of him. He ran 11:23 and came in 6th. This morning he said that his legs hurt, and that he hopes that in 2nd grade he doesn't have to run 2 miles! Big grin

Does anyone here have an elementary-aged child who had to run a mile in gym? I'm curious how common this is. My older kids all went through the same school and they didn't have to run it until 4th grade. Now they have the first graders running the test.

I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade when I first recall running the mile...but maybe it was younger?

My legs are killing me

My 6 year old hasn't had to do that. It seems like alot of distance for kids that young. He did run in a 1/2 mile kids race last month and I was really surprised those little legs ran that far without stopping.

That's a great job by your son.

I did it in 1st or 2nd. I remember the gym teacher saying we were going to do cross country running, and thinking he meant that older people, once they are good at, run all the way across the country. Now a quick shout out to Mr. Locker of Mary Castle Elementary, wherever you are.

We did the mile each year from 4th grade on, but not earlier.

That's awesome the little dude ran a mile in 1st grade! What did his long run get up to in training?

4th grade sounds about right.

I'm curious to what the other kids ran. Just because I can't imagine that any of them have run a mile like that before. I wonder if any parents objected?

Training...ummm, he runs around the yard, does that count? Big grin He already thinks his mom and dad are crazy for running, there's no way he'd actually train to run.

At that age I would bet that the limiting factor isn't fitness, it's attention span. It's surprising how far little kids can run if they really want to.

I don't remember ever being timed in a mile in elementary school. Doesn't mean it didn't happen, but I don't recall it at all. My first mile (that I know of for sure) was a fun run at the end of 6th grade.

MTA: I do remember our elementary school "field meet" in 4th grade. There were people running the 300m dash. I was amazed -- it seemed like they were running forever.

First one I remember doing was in second grade, and we had a certain number of popsicle sticks (one for each lap), and we had to drop one in the bin each time we went around -- of course we all cheated and dropped multiple popsicle sticks in at once because the mile at that age was like the longest distance in the world.

I think when you start the physical fit test depends on what state you are in and what they require.

Mine (1st grader, just turned 7 in April) is dying to do a 1 Mile Fun. There is one June 7th here, I am going to take him out to the track Wed and see if we can work up to it.

He has run 1/2 mile...I don't know his time but I know that the 1st-3rd grades all ran it together. He came in 2nd behind a 3rd grader. I am thinking about buying him a MP-3 and putting his favorite songs it just so he can be like dad.

I WISH my kid liked organized running. He has endurance and speed like nobody's business, but when I try to talk him into jogging around the block with me has has NO interest. Such a shame, since he seems to be a natural. Give him his bike and a helmet and he'll go for miles, though. I think he and did once did a 7 miler last Summer--when he was only 6. And on a crappy little kids BMX type bike. Once he is old enough I am certain we'll get him a junior scaled road bike.

My kids ran miles as a test since 1st grade. Their times are between 15 and 17 minutes. They can and like to outrun me over quarter miles. The times seemed very slow to me, especially as my son's times in three years haven't changed.

I asked if the times were as fast as they could go. They told me their gym teacher didn't encourage them to run fast, just jog around. I should go find out exactly what the deal is, but niether kid likes to run so I can see them just getting bored and going slow.
