Why Don't I See These People At My Walmart? (Read 1312 times)

Giddyup.

Right...'cause overweight people are never openly mocked or shunned...or Hispanics...or Asians...or blondes...or the elderly...or mentally handicapped...or gays...or people of Middle Eastern descent since 9/11....

Yup.  And this list could be continued... example, people of nontraditional sexual preference...

Incidentally, per Doug's comment above about experiencing the day when everyone openly mocks each other (and it isn't taken badly)... that's kinda like how it is in Hawai'i.  It's such a broad mix of cultures and heritages in a confined space with no physical "out", and this is just how it works.  But everyone bands together in their love/hate relationship with tourists.  Which, alas, sometimes just means "tourists" and other times means specifically "white people from the continental US or Germany".  Or depending on where you are, "Japanese tourists".

Anyway.  Rich, poor, white or green... you show up like what we see in the original link, and you might get mocked.

    Ultima tastes like failure.

      Zoomy,

I seem to have really set you off and perhaps offended you in some unintended way.  I didn't mean to and am happy to be wrong on this issue.

I just wonder - someone explain to me - why it is that if someone called me a "sand n**ger" (as I was called more than once as a kid) in the local CVS, heads would turn and offended brows would furrow, but if someone else muttered "redneck" or "white trash" at a white person there would not be the same reaction (there might, I dare say, be quiet amusement)

I am really just trying to learn, not stoke a fire.

Redneck is not exactly viewed as offensive by most rednecks.  White trash?  ok I'll give you that.  There's nothing nice there.

As a white guy I rarely see or hear anything that offends me due to my race.

100 years ago we white people were probably damned Catholics, damned Irish, damned Italians, damned Poloks, damned Jews, damned whatevers... and that is a little more offensive.  'Cause now your splitting us into... into what ladies and gentlemen?  Yes... minority groups.

So I see a difference that is justifiable.

        Just my honky opinion.

In an infinite universe, the one thing sentient life cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion

And...to get back to Lynn's point, Walmart shoppers are not really an ethnic group.

Really, I'm not upset...just trying to put things in perspective.  And, like Doug pointed out, most rednecks are pretty proud of their status and wear it with pride. Wink

The Middle Eastern thing REALLY gets me (my late FIL had his PhD in Middle Eastern History and my hubby was born in Cairo...he catches all sorts of shit when he travels across borders, even though he is about as WASPy as an atheist can be).  I will be changing hair stylists after mine used the term "towel head."  I thought she was open-minded and progressive, but I guess not.

That was kind of my point...I think people do still think it's OK to be offensive towards other groups, not just the group the Wal-Mart site seems to target.  The woman who cuts my hair is obese...yet she thinks nothing of throwing out a grotesque racial slur in a place of business.

In many cases those who might fit the "white trash" stereotype choose to fall into that mold.  Nobody made them sport a mullet 20+ years after it was "fashionable" or wear filthy, torn-up t-shirts or too much make-up.  And sitting outside a WM drinking Bud Light?  That shows poor taste on more than one level. What does Tunis make?

Hey, what's wrong with being a "towel head" ? I remember wrapping towels over our heads when coming out of a swim workout in the winter in upstate NY -- better to be a towel head than have ice in your hair...

                Heh.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

                  Where in upstate?

Well, I find it heightens the whole WM shopping experience, or so I'm told.

Anything to kill the pain of shopping at Wally World, I guess.  Though this would be faster:

Yeah, that place can be stressful:

Damn it.  I had to go to Walmart tonight to pick up a prescription tonight, and found myself looking around to see if anyone warranted snapping a pic of - all thanks to this thread.  (Luckily, no pics were necessary).

After seeing this and noting the locations where these people/stores are, no one - and I mean no one - can ever single out the Wal-Marts and the people from the South again.

We got nothin' on these folks.

Was actually in TN this weekend for a wedding and had to stop at a Walmart.  Luckily my wife went in, we forgot some stuff and of most important a portable crib for my two yr old.

Anyways this Walmart was packed and looked like x-mas time with people scurrying in and out.  I had my camera ready but did not see anything worthy.

Wife did come back with story of being held up in line behind some lady with "two teeth" and was adament that their debit card should be working, but cashier told them insufficient funds.  so "Two Tooth Tammy" (madeup name) says "Damn that Junior .... he told me he deposited that check last night and should be money in there ... then gets on the phone to call old junior and bitch him out while still holding up the line.

Now we went to wedding in a lakeside "resort" (use that term lightly) on Center hill lake in the middle of nowhere.  Closest store was a convienent/gas station 8 miles a way, can't remember name but they had a big ass sign out from with the store name and under "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem .... Welcome to the Whatever the name was!"

I like the part of sight disclaimer of "not responsible if Bubba catches you taking picture and beats you up"

                                Nader,

appreciate the racial sensitivity, but would say if you saw these folks in an upscale place it would be just as funny.  If someone of any color/income range goes out in public looking/acting like this they are fair game.

We are all different and if most folksd could lighten up and laugh at each other and/or themselves in a good way I think we would all be better off.
