Another marathon myth? (Read 496 times)

I haven't run any marathons yet but I did carbo load before my long runs. I will try to do my next long run without carbo loading.

That was hilarious! I'd never heard of that! I especially liked this bit:

Scout, those are interesting articles--especially for someone like me, who is hypoglycemic and really struggles to not overdo it with the carbs. I lost over 50#s on Atkins and felt fantastic (and have near perfect blood lipid and blood pressure levels, too) when I would consistently watch my junk carbs (pretty much any "white" carb...sugar, flour, rice, potatoes). But since I started running I have really had a rough time trying to figure out a balance, since I know I need a higher level of carbohydrate than I had been consuming before starting running--lately I have put weight back on and I know it's because of instable blood sugar causing me to be ravenous and eat everything in sight (and the running itself making me rationalize some really poor eating choices on top of things).

I really need to start backing back off on the carbs and be more diligent about avoiding white flour and processed sugar. I used to do some carb cycling with pretty good success and I might want to do that again, as that first article discussed to train one's body to use glycogen more efficiently. I know weight lifters will often carb cycle, so it's interesting to see it used for aerobic athletes, too. It does fly in the face of conventional wisdom, but so do most low carb/high fat diets and I am definitely a success story for those sorts of weight loss programs.

You're right, I didn't mean to say that there was no debate going on over fueling and training runs. Only that that particular article appeared to be 100% joke.

And thanks for the articles. I especially found the second one interesting and useful.

Too funny.

As for carbo-loading ... all I know for sure is that it's definitely possible to OVERDO it. And ya don't wanna do that. This time around, I'm just eating healthy and slighly stressing carbs.

Not having kids, I've been trying to train the dog. It's not going so well, and I think it's for 2 reasons:
A) No thumbs
2) Doggie ADD
D) I prefer bottles over cans, and they're tough to grip in her mouth.
