Hip pain (Read 1060 times)

Hey...
I've been having stabbing pain in my hip while running. Usually shows up around mile 4. Mind you, I only run 4-6 miles on a LONG run.
I am hoping to get up to 10 miles by May for the Broad St run.
I'm thinking it is bursitis, since I've had that in my hip within the last 2 years. ( from cycling )
Any cures, remedies or ideas on how to fix the problem??
I do 'warm up', Ice after workouts and stretch....no difference at all

I've had some hip pain in the past. I think most of mine was due to running all of my runs on the left side of a crowned roadway. Could that have anything to do with your pain? It certainly makes a difference if I switch it up.
good luck

I have heard that too... I usually try to run in the middle of the road along the double yellow line. ( I live in a very rural area, and cars can be seen a mile away....)
I guess I'm going to call the Doc tomorrow and get an appt with the specialist. SUX...

Is your pain more towards the front of your hip like right below your hip bone? Or is it further back from your hip bone towards your butt? If it's the former, it could be the connection point of your IT band. Your IT band runs from your knee to your hip and I often get pain in my hip when my IT bands are tight. I didn't realize it until I went to a massage therapist who massaged along my IT band up to that point - then it was blatantly obvious how tight it was.
If it is the latter (further back from and below your hip bone), it could be your piriformis. I have lots of problems with my piriformis muscle and the pain manifests itself in my "hip". This is a deep muscle that runs from the middle of your tailbone (or perhaps the next bone up in your spine) across your bottom and swoops up to connect at your hip. Try pressing deep into the middle of your behind and press along upwards to your hip. If you feel pain along the way, it's probably your piriformis.
Good stretching exercises help with both of these and these are both common chronic injuries in runners. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I'm glad you're deciding to see the dr. about it. I have some hip pains too, but sounds like our pains are different. Mine is a form of Bursitis, and flares up during/after speed workouts and hurts after sitting for a long time (long car drives especially). It used to be the left hip but that never bothers me anymore, now it's the right hip from time to time. My mom has Bursitis as well so I'm not shocked that I have it.

It feels like on the side of my hip bone, closer to my butt....very hard to explain. Mine also flares up while in a car for a long time. Which is 14 days out of the month, 12 hours each day...

Wow - I didn't realize that we shared the same
profession
. I also work 14 / 12 hour shifts a month. Isn't it fun trying to squeeze a long run into those long weekend stretches... and still sleep a few hours? I frequently take time off just to do long runs.
I've noticed that the cramped cars can be a pain when my runner's knees act up.
Good luck with your appointments

Yes, the job can be a tad inconvienient for working out in general. I notice after a few hours in the car, I get shooting pain in my hip. I usually get out of the car and do a 'foot beat' to stretch the hip out...
Oh well, too bad I can't claim IOD for hip prob...lol

Sports massage felt nice on my shoulders, no help with the hip. I have not run much the past few weeks. Lately it hurts just sitting in the car. Swimming is the only thing that I can do right now that does not hurt. I had an appt with my primary and she gave me the old "take advil and rest" speech.
Someone on trifuel.com suggested I try ART. ( Active release technique)
I called a few providers in the area. I have an appointment with one on Monday. Many people (atheletes) think this is just the cats meow of PT. I'll let you know...

I am interested in what your pt says. I have similar symptoms. My most trusted PT is soon returning from maternity leave so may have to give her a call. General practice md gave me the same speech you got. I could still run on mine without pain in moderate distances but hurt in the car or in bed or in a chair.

Gwen,
A couple of thoughts:
1. Make sure the docs rule out a stress fracture. The only recourse for one is rest.
2. I've found that a tennis ball is an ideal self-massage tool for the hips. I put the ball on the ground then my aching hip area atop it, then roll slowly and gently from side to side, around and around. It's the home equivalent of massage -- helping to release the trigger point that causes the pain. The key is making sure you relax the muscles. The natural tendency is to tighten them because there will be some pain. Find the area that hurts the most, then roll around on it. Of course, if the pain is unbearable, stop by all means! You might want to start with an older tennis ball. They've lost some of their air and tend to give more generously than one right out of the can.
Good luck. Hope to join you at the Broad Street Run in 2008.

After 4 sessions with the ART doc, my hip feels much better. I have been on 'rest' now for the whole month of December. I have been doing 10-15 mins of PT each day at home. Combination stretching, using a "Quadballer" from Triggerpoint and doing strength training.
The doc took x-rays and reports that I don't have a stress fracture. He states that I have mild arthritis in my hips, most likely due to nutrition. I have been taking fish oil now, he claims it helps with inflimation. The ART treatments help by breaking up the scar tissue I have accumulated by overuse.
He states that I have overdeveloped quads and underdeveloped hamstrings. (common with cyclists and runners) He says that the imbalance of the muscle groups is making my hip flexors tight and pulling my pelvis out of alignment. That imbalance is giving me pain in the hips while running.
If I strengthen my hamstrings and work on loosening my hip flexors, my pelvis will take a more nuetral position and hopefully help with the pain.
I have been walking a lot lately to get myself back in the game. I can start walk/running next week. Yay!
Baby steps of course...I start half-marathon training the first week of Feb.

Thanks, sounds kinda like what I go through. Last year my pt had me do exercises that basically strenghtened my left hamstring to help my right hip and si and I was good until a short fall layoff and coming back too strong.
