Obama won.. (Read 1497 times)

    I think it is clear that the US and most EU countries have fundamentally different philosophies.  I will let you all beat each other up about which is bad and good.  Smile

    It comes and goes in cycles. Reagan would have been dismissed as a Hollywood liberal by the voices that are currently loudest in the Republican party. I don't recall Thatcher being entirely socialist in her outlook either.

    The process is the goal.

    Men heap together the mistakes of their lives, and create a monster they call Destiny.

        Isn't not "keeping the uterus to themselves" where the problem begins???  Shocked

          It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

                  the most appropriate point made yet in this thread.

                  when you have $114,000,000 in future spending committed to an underperforming 3rd base asset as part of a crumbling infrastructure you are not being fiscally responsible. Short term infusions lead to short term results with long term repercussions. Sabathia, A-Rod, and Texiera are owed nearly 1/2 of a billion dollars. Good luck with that. Perhaps the Yankees will be able to issue long term bonds which may be considered a safe investment given a troubled Europe.

                  I'd take Sabathia back on the Brewers gladly.

                  Oh... I mean back to the thread.  Obama won.

                    Yes... it never occurred to me before, but grammatically "uterus" is a masculine noun. Huh.

                      I = singular

                      us = plural

                      uteri = plural

                      uterus = singular

                      I will never get a handle on this English shit.

                      Utter confusion.

                        English??

                           Not that I care to have a dog in the fight, but you missed the point.  It was implying that Europe's problems are the result of socialist/liberal polices (yes, pre dating the Obama term) that make Obama look like a moderate.  Nothing to do with Obama's performance.

                          I understand what it was implying. I was just pointing out that the US has had very significant financial problems recently and they substantially arose whilst Republicans were in power, so trying to make a link between relatively left wing governments and financial problems seems questionable.

                          The countries of Europe quite varied, and have quite different governments, philosophies and economies. Some are rather strong economically - like Germany (which has what Americans would consider to be rather left wing economic and social policies) and some are complete financial basket cases - like Greece.

                            I think the part that is questionable is implying that the Republicans are not a left wing government.  We have two parties in this country, the extremely financially liberal and the very financially liberal.  Your observation of who was in power when our financial problems arose is the classic argument that both parties want to continue.  The more we argue about whose fault it is the less we realize that it is both of them.

                              .  The more we argue about whose fault it is the less we realize that it is both of them.

                               +1.  For those who 4 years later still blame everything on Bush, the roots to many of our current issues can also be traced back to the Clinton era.  Round and round we go.  The problems go deeper than party labels.  Despite the campaign rhetoric, IMHO anyone who thinks either of our choices would have even tried to do something substantive to address the burgeoning entitlement problems...or even try...is fooling themselves.

                              In truth presidents claim too much credit when things go right and get too much blame when things go wrong.  The post is not as all-powerful as some seem to think.

                              One thing we should have learned from the Arab Spring was that people with a strong will for change can overcome even government willing to use violence against them.  If the people want change they need to have the will for it.  If we as a people keep voting for the same people and policies that created our problems it's not really the politicians we have to blame....

                                it is exceedingly easy to think of people different from yourself as the reason for your problesms.  this has been true throughout human history.  it is the reason i can turn on a conservative talk radio program the day after the election and hear about single black mothers scamming the system and bankrupting our country.  it is the reason i could wander through a 99% encampment and hear about rich old bankers and the military destroying the world.  hell, it was a major force for killing off 30 million people only 25-30 years before I was born.  but alas, like most people i have no answer.
