My 305 seems to be extremely accurate, always within 99% accuracy, but I've noticed that when it is a little off, it's always on the long side. So I was curious as to whether anyone knows if the Garmin calculates the additional distance added to a route with a lot of elevation changes. Thanks for any input.
24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence?

It does not calculate distance to deal with elevation change (which would, presumably, be a version of the Pythagorean theorem). The reason it is long is due to innacuracy. The signal is likely less strong in hilly areas, which would presumably allow greater innacuracy in such areas.
It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack.
