I'm a Prius driver for about the last 14 months.
All in all, its a great car with very low cost of ownership. I've not had to take it back to the dealer yet for ANYTHING. Mileage is usually in the 40-45 range since I take so many short trips. Longer trips, even around town, get closer to 50. Highway mileage closer to 50 as well.
We use it as our family transporter during the weekends and park our SUV except for trips over 4 hours where we need the luggage space. We save a ton of money of gas over driving the SUV around town.
That said, I'm secretly jealous of zoomie's car (I test drove one and loved it). The prius is not terribly fun to drive but it is very practical, roomier than you think, and comfortable. Ok, and boring...
I ran a mile and I liked it, liked it, liked it.

I could have sworn i posted this already but I don't see it up there. Wierd.
anyway, I ride a motorcycle to work 8 months or so out of the year, that gets at least 50 mpg. Fuel economy is totally the reason I got it. haha.
When the weather is bad there's a bus I can take, but I still have to drive to the bus stop so it's not ideal.

We have Kia sedona, doesn't really get used much and a Saturn. The wife drives the Sattie as the price of gas goes up. Minus AC it avg's 40 mpg hwy and 35-38 city. Minus 5 for AC use. The van on the other hand gets 22-25. I'm all about alternate modes and using a bike but my wife's not up for it. I like the idea of biking to work since I live less than 2 miles away but am forced to take the car d/t needing to get home quick in the mornings so she can leave for work. And then there's the whole AC discussion..another topic another time...

Driving with the windows open creates drag and decreases fuel efficiency. It's a wash. I'd rather be comfy with the AC.

I just got my license in the middle of March and got my 1996 Ford Explorer about 3 weeks ago. According to the digital display, I've been getting about 14.8 MPG. That part is a drag, but the gas isn't really a big expense since I'm only 16 and don't drive to work or anything. Just a few miles to school. I wouldn't have minded getting a car, but we had some trouble finding a used one in decent condition in my price range.
In a way, I would have preferred a car. Driving a mid size SUV isn't quite fun or thrilling and obviously the handling isn't amazing but I guess at 16 I don't need any more encouragement to speed or drive recklessly.

I drive a '99 Corolla but only get, like, 21 miles/gallon. Stupid city driving in the Bay Area. Lots of idling, and you kind of have to accelerate quickly because everyone around you is driving aggressively.
If I had all the money in the world, I think I'd get a Civic hybrid. I hear Subaru's finally about to come out with hybrids, too. Rock.

Ryan, that's interesting that used cars are tough to find. I wonder if there are a lot more used trucks and SUVs on lots than there were 5-10 years ago.
BTW, if you're interested in a boring, but very efficient car we have a little old '97 Escort for sale...6 disc CD changer, power everything, 5 speed manual. A/C is dead, though.

What is everyone driving these days? My wife and I are both considreing new (newer) cars. We're considering Toyota Prius for the obvious reasons, Mini coopers as they just look really cool, but also Beamers or Volvo's as I'd like to have a little class. Thoughts? discussion?
Lets see, If I could afford a Pruis, Mini Cooper, Beamer or Volvo, then the price of gas wouldn't matter.

me too.
there's no bus I can take, it's too far to run, and I won't move my family every time my employment changes.

We have a 1996 Honda. It is nice not having the extra car payment.
_______________
We bought a 2007 Ford Freestyle after my wife did this:
Before buying the Ford, We researched car safety at this website:
http://www.safercar.gov/
We have a large dog , a large teenage son who has a lot of large friends; who all want to go places together. We need a large car.
The vehicle that was totaled (1999 ford explorer) has received bad press about its safety, but I believe things would have turned out a lot worse if my wife was driving a smaller vehicle when she went off the road.

I am driving an 06' Navigator.
The only good thing other than being able to expense my mileage, is that my bike fits in the back w/out taking the wheel off. It also proves to be a nice locker room to change in.
Other than that it is just a big gas guzzlin, environement killer that has never come close to going off road.

I drive a 2000 Honda Civic stick. At 115,000, it's probably just getting broken in. Only problem is, it's been through 4 oxygen sensors. I assume it still gets about 35. I don't really bother to track it. Once, I know I got over 40.
Other car is a Honda Element auto. Love it, but I drive it fast and it's AWD, so I get @ 23 highway. 25 if I'm good. Fast don't matter so much in the Civic.
Gas prices mean we drive the Civic more. It'll be taking us to Boston this weekend. I figure it'll be about $75 cheaper in gas.
