With gas prices nearing $4.00........ (Read 946 times)

We're keeping our subaru station wagon until someone comes up with an electric car. A few companies are talking about releasing a limited number in 2010. Big grin
An electric Mini would be a cool choice.

I guess I'm going through a mid life crisis so I'm driving a 2004 Chev Venture mini van. It really is a magnet for all the hot women and I know deep down all the guys want to drive one. Big grin

I drive a 2001 Jeep Wrangler -- 15 to 17 mpg Undecided
It wasn't so bad when I bought it back in late 2000 as it took about 18$ to fill her up. Now my tank costs over $50. Luckily i'm only driving about 10 miles a day, but I do pay for parking in Atlanta as well. I could ride the train, but honestly i just like driving better.

I know, i'm so un-green.

We work at home, so we have a short commute down the stairs! We have a '99 Ford Escort and a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. The Tahoe can hold 9 people, so we use it to haul groups of kids around - cheaper than taking two cars. We have a cabin at the top of a steep, half-mile rock road, so we need the 4-wheel drive to get up it. We drive the Tahoe as little as possible, but it is a pleasure! Very smooth ride and lots of power. The Escort has 170,000 miles on it and is still going strong. We wil drive it into the ground!

I drive a ford windstar that gets a terrible 15mpg city driving and barely 22mpg freeway driving.

Ford Excursion with a 7.3L diesel Big grin ==> No! It'd be nice though.

I drive a family sedan designed by a company in Japan and manufactured in Kentucky.

If I had the money, I would be have a driver and a high end automobile such as a Maybach.

Yes! I was in my first wreck ever about 6 months ago with my kids in the car with me. Fortunately, no one was hurt (us or in the other car). I drive a Yukon, and at the time we were considering getting a minivan for better fuel efficiency. After the wreck though, it's "bigger is better" for me. We're going to keep the current car for a while and see if a Hybrid Suburban is in the works (??anyone know??).

I'm all for cutting the cost of gas and dependance on oil or whatever, but after I saw what my car did to the Camry that pulled out in front of me Shocked, I'm going to stick with my gas guzzler becasue I feel safer in it.

Monkey Scratch
2006 Accord sedan V6. Gets about 17 mpg in town and 25 mpg on the highway.

Only drive it about 20 miles per day during the week as I take the train into the city and walk to work from the train station. No way I would sit in traffic and pay to park in the city. No way in hell.

Next car will likely be a hybrid.

DW drives a 2005 Mazda Tribute V6 and will also buy a hybrid next time.

To be honest, I'm glad to see petrol prices rise in US$ as it raises this sort of discussion and make people think about more eco friendly choices.

Cheap prices and over sized engines have been the norm for too long (IMO). The only way to halt that is rising $ for the the gallon.

By the title, I assume its reaching $4 per Gallon in the US? Thats still ridiculously cheap by standards here.
Some quick math:

$1 = €0.63
1 Litre fuel = €1.20
3.8 Litres = 1 Gallon
=> 1 Gallon = €4.56
1 Gallon = $7.20.

The average engine here is 1.4 litre - they generally get around 40mpg

MTA - MPG

Goals for 2008: 10k - Phoenix Park - 6 April 48:47 1/2 Marathon - Longford - 24 August Marathon - Dublin - 27 October. Its Man v Distance. Distance is in trouble.

Subaru is the way to go in VT. Decent gas mileage, and they can go up steep hills and be safe on snowy/icy/muddy roads (which I wouldn't trust any kind of hybrid to do).

They also don't look like over-sized lunchboxes on wheels cough cough *Prius* cough cough.

Honda S2000. I get about 22 mpg city which is decent for a sports car, but it takes premium fuel too. Sad
Non ducor, duco.
I got a "new-to-me" 2006 Suburban last week. Sure, its a hundred bucks to fill up but with 4 kids, its the best choice. I also enjoy propping up my local Houston economy.
In search of trouble.

Those are nice! I used to have one. When you have a big family fuel economy isn't always the most important feature to a vehicle.

I average about 50 miles a day during the week. I have been looking to cut this down to an average of 6-10 miles.

Weekend mileage varies a great deal for me.

I drive a 2002 Jeep Wrangler and really don't see myself getting a different vehicle any time soon. This one is paid off and I like it so much that when I do replace it, it will more than likely be with another Wrangler. I know the mileage is not great (18 or so highway) but my commute is short and if I haven't mentioned it...I REALLY like the Jeep.

DW drives a 2006 Volvo V50 wagon. Mileage isn't bad but the safety was key with a new little one in the house. We use that for most of our errands and drive time...probably about 24 or so mpg.

I do bike in to work a couple days a week as the weather gets nicer, but honestly, that's more for me than for being green...yeah, I'm probably going to eco-hell.
