Ford Focus station wagon -- best in its class at the time I bought it for fuel economy. I get around 25-30mpg around town. I also try to ride my bike to work at least one day a week. I used to ride to work 4 days each week. At that time I was only filling up my car once a month. That was nice. I hope to get back to that this spring.

Just dumped the full size GMC truck and got a used '99 Honda Civic 4-door... almost new at 135,000 miles.
Dirt cheap to drive too. I'm getting 36-40 mpg in the city (it's pretty easy to add a LOT of additional efficiency just by changing some simple driving habits), the plates were $38 ($3 ownership tax!), and the insurance is $360/yr for full coverage. Overall, it was hard for me to beat those economics (the truck averaged 14.8 mpg).
Cars mean nothing to me though, so I don't really care how old or ugly they are, as long as they get from point A to point B cheap and reliably.

So, I have an 11 month old and another one due in 7 months
. Right now my wife has an 07 Toyota Rav4, which is plenty of room for us and the one kid and dog, plus it gets decent gas mileage. These days my wife spends more time in the back seat feeding/entertaining/whatever than in the front seat with me on any trip more than a few minutes long. I'm afraid with 2 car seats, it's going to be near impossible though. There is no room to sit in between them. What do the rest of you with 2 small kids drive? My wife is totally against a mini-van, so that's not even a possibility. We have driven Tahoes, Expeditions, etc. We really didn't want to get the giant evil SUV (hence the Rav), but we're not sure what else to do.

I was totally against mini-vans until we bought one. Hated them more than anything. They I tried them out and realized they are awesome! I absolutely LOVE mine! It drives like a car, it's really quick (265hp engine), it's very modular w/ the back seats (I love it because I sleep in the back before runs/climbs/etc), can carry a sheet of drywall, holds 7 people. The downside is that it doesn't get good gas mileage (18/21 city/hwy), so we don't drive it as a daily car, only when we need the room and on long trips. (We have a Honda Odyssey, btw)
You should have her test drive a few, or rent one for the weekend...

Eight kids, half of them driving, somehow, Daddy gets stuck with the gas bills, that's why I try to ride by bike to work as much as possible.

To be honest, I'm glad to see petrol prices rise in US$ as it raises this sort of discussion and make people think about more eco friendly choices.
True that.

Check this thing out:

In hybrid form, for in-town trips you'd run on battery only. Highway up to 40 miles or so, 300 mpg. Highway long trips, 120 or so mpg.

1993 Mazda Miata LE! (black and red)!! I don't know the gas mileage, and I don't care! Top down weather is here
I am thinking of getting a bicycle because I want to cross-train and run a few errands at the same time. To this end, I've been looking around the city for bike racks. I am surprised by the lack of bike racks at places like shopping centers and other places that I might want to go. Strange.
