With gas prices nearing $4.00........ (Read 946 times)

I love the Hondas. I have owned them for 25+years and pretty much drive them until the wheels fall off. I own 2 now and once I get through my daughters' wedding this year I may get Mrs. Hoss a S2000. I really want a pick-em up truck but not with gas at $3.25/gallon and heading north.

I am a capitalist at heart but it is hard to change the equation when your place of work is a 20+ mile drive one way. Here in central VA we have squat for public transportation. I wish we would build light rail system to connect the region to the city. I guess EXXON will continue knocking down $10bln/year since we can't seem to lose the love affair with our wheels...

Acura TSX (2005).

I bought it because it got excellent reviews from Consumer Reports and did well in crash tests. It gets around 20 city/28 highway. The navigation system is, like, the best thing ever.

The worst thing that I can say about it is that the exterior is a little bland. It pretty much looks like every other 4 door sedan out there. Acura is redesigning the car for 2009 - I haven't seen it in person yet, but I hear it has a little more style now.

Have you ever wondered if there was more to life other than being really, really, ridiculously good looking?

I love my Volvo. First one S70 got 27 mpg local, the S80 is 6 cylinder turbo so gets 23 local and 28 on the long trips back to Jersey (provided I keep the speed under 80 mph).
I have a 97 Hond Civic with 230K miles. Gets about 32 combined city/hwy (mostly hwy). Looking for a new and bigger car. Thinking of the Toyata Matrix or maybe a Honda Fit or a Nissan Versa.

2003 Durango - purchased to drive DOS and 3-5 friends to school as part of carpool, when gas was a lot cheaper 8 Ball
Wouldn't you know it, by soph. year they all got friends who drove and commuted with them instead.

Now I'm stuck with 9.9 mpg - good thing it's only 3.5 miles to work. If we don't use it on the weekends I can go just about a month between fillups (25 gal tank).

But, it IS capable of hauling 7000 lbs behind it, if I ever need that. Wink

Well, I am now the proud owner of a 2005 Toyota............PRIUS! My last fill at the pumps for my F250 actually hit $100.00.!! The dealer fillled the tank for me for $36.00.and stated I'd get 500 miles on it. We'll see. However, I feel no remorse, no regret, and am actually kind of proud of my choice. Maybe now I can drive out to run with some of you sometime! Big grin

Andy, isn't that thing eerie at stoplights? A friend of mine had a Prius for a while (they bought it used and it started giving them problems a few months in). It was really strange sitting at a light in a car that is essentially off. If I lived in a city I'd get one in a heartbeat.

Treehugger.
My '99 Honda Accord has 208,000 miles on it Big grin I fully plan on driving it into the ground. It was a college graduation present from my parents (the previous owners, who totally wanted an excuse to get a new Accord), so there's no car payment. Gets about 20mpg around town, closer to 30 highway. I take the bus to work as much as is practical (usually about 3 times a week), try to carpool, etc.

Added: Boyfriend has a lovely '03 Civic, which gets better gas mileage, and is also much zippier (possibly because it has 150K less miles on it). My next car, should I ever get one, will probably be a Toyota Yaris hatchback (think of the parking possibilities! I could park ANYWHERE), or one of those electric things that's coming out in the next few years.

Hi All

Out of interest I did the calculation to work out how much we are paying in the UK for fuel (converted into to $/US Gallon).

We pay £1.29 / litre. There are 3.78 litres in a US Gallon. A pound (£) is ~$1.97.

Therefore we are currently paying 1.29 x 3.78 x 1.97 = $9.60 / gallon.

Ouch.

For me - it's a seat on the subway (which is not without it's constant fare increases). Or an occasional rental from ZipCar.
Main car - Lexus LS430, get's about 22mpg driving it around town, around 27mpg on the highway.

2nd car - 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 - I only use this on ski trips to Tahoe and when I take out the dirt bikes. Gets around 15mpg city and maybe 18mpg on the highway. Over $100 to fill right now.

3rd car - 01 Honda XR250 Dual Sport dirtbike - gets about 80mpg, I usually take this on the odd gopher trips plus I'll ride it to work at least once a week.

All this stuff is long-ago paid for and, in my not so humble opinion, it would be penny-wise but pound-foolish to the Nth degree to trade any of it in for a "high-MPG" small car.

If I WERE going to drop some coin on a new car I would most likely select a CNG-powered Honda Civic. I think these are far more 'green' than a hybrid vehicle. I don't think you can buy these CNG Civics in most states, though, in California you can.

I drive a 2008 Hyundai Sonata, I love it, it's fairly good on gas. It costs $55 to fill it up and I live 3 minutes from school and 4 minutes from work. I'm soooo glad I don't have to drive a long way for anything Smile
