Late Night Snackoholism (Read 927 times)

Beware, batbear...

Hi.  My name is Josh and I'm a late night snackoholic.

It started when I was very young when my parents would let my sister and I have a nighty night snack, but recently I've found that once 8:00 rolls around, and I should be chilling out sans food, I just want to eat every snack in the cupboard.

I've taken the first step and admitted that I have a problem, the problem is bigger than me and I need help.

    Anyone else been there?

    2012 Goals:

    1.  1500+ miles.

    2.  Streak starting in March or April if I'm healed.

    3.  100 Push up challenge to get some upper body strength back.

    4.  Get weight under 180 by the end of the summer.

    5.  1 or fewer alcoholic drinks 4+ nights per week every week.

    6.  Concentrate on 5K distance and September HM.

    7.  Have fun!

I'm fine at night....when I'm done with dinner, I don't have the desire to eat anything else.  Afternoons, however, are a different story.  Seriously, food is ALL I think about all afternoon.
I did the same thing growing up.... big bowl of ice cream every night, usually covered with maple syrup or chocolate... was okay until in my 30's and it started to show.  I still have not kicked the habit but have replaced the ice cream with a cup of mixed nuts or even Kashi Crunch. Hard to quit... I quit smoking after many years and that was almost easier.

          Alcoholism=Alcohol
          Snackoholism=Snackohol?

            Josh,

I thought you were describing me for a minute...........nothing to down 6 or 7 cookies and a cup of milk at about 8:30PM and then go back for more..........and sometimes, I'm far worse.......

Quit that!  And run more.  There.

Try brushing your teeth just before that time of night.  That works for me.  Floss, brush, mouthwash.  You won't want to eat after all that.

Are you eating enough during the day? If you're snacking b/c you're hungry, maybe you should eat more during the day.

But if you're snacking b/c it's a habit thing, maybe you should do something different at night.

Personally I like to go to bed a little bit hungry b/c it helps me wake up in the morning.

                  Best Present Ever

This is my downfall.  I find I have to change my habits to make myself stop.  It's not that I'm hungry, but I'm doing the dishes, making kids lunches, making my own lunch and snacking away.  It's very frustrating. For me, if I break the habit for a week or so -- just decide no more food after dinner -- it is usually easier for a long while after that.  I make myself a cup of something decaffeinated to drink, or I get my husband to do to the kitchen stuff (he usually does the kids bedtime routine).  No matter what, though, I'll find myself drifting back to the habit.  If you google, you'll see lots of advice. Most of it isn't that helpful for me (yes I eat plenty of calories during the day, etc).

                    Head in the Clouds

I did the same thing growing up.... big bowl of ice cream every night, usually covered with maple syrup or chocolate... was okay until in my 30's and it started to show.  I still have not kicked the habit but have replaced the ice cream with a cup of mixed nuts or even Kashi Crunch. Funny, quitting smoking seemed easier to me too. I think sugar/refined carbs can be just as addictive. I get the snack cravings like crazy in the evening too. To avoid those cravings, I try to eat enough during the day so I'm not starving at night and craving things. The other thing that works for me is to just not have junk food in the house. I eat a pretty healthy dinner with lots of veggies. If I have to eat something after, I love cottage cheese with cut up strawberries (and blueberries if available and on sale). It helps that i go to bed fairly early since I'm a morning runner.

And eat slowly. And if you have a craving for a sweet, wait 20 minutes. maybe the craving will pass. An apple with some natural peanut butter is really good too - my favorite afternoon snack. Or a Greek yogurt with some almonds and honey. Just gotta surround yourself with healthier options. Find a tea you like and make it an evening ritual. And have the freakin ice cream once in a while.

One recipe I like is one I got from a member of my running club. it's a raw brownie (really tastes like one):

5 to 10 dates chopped up (there are two kinds of dates, one has 17gr carbs per date, one has 5 - go with the 5)

Couple scoops of almonds chopped up or almond meal - maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 cup

                      1-2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

                      Touch of honey or agave

2 scoops of whey protein powder (this makes it not qualify as food. It's only "food")

Combine ingredients in a bowl and add enough cold water to blend and get the consistency you like. Let it set in the fridge a bit. I get 4 servings, each about 300 kcal and loaded with protein and good fats and moderate in carbs.

                      A Saucy Wench

I've mostly switched to eating a protein snack before bed.  I get the food but not the sweet.  plain yogurt (yes I like it plain but it takes getting used to) cheese, something like that.

Yeah, if it's there, I will eat it.  So, I usually don't stock anything that's too snacky in the cupboard.  What I do have is yogurt, fruit, milk.  Sometimes cereal.  Usually when faced with such healthy options, I then decide I'm not actually hungry after all, but if I decide that I really need to eat 3 oranges while I watch TV, I'm pretty much ok with that.

                          Upcoming plans:

                          Tahoe Rim Trail 50 M (July 16)

                          Hot To Trot (August)

Woods Ferry 24 Hour (Labor Day weekend)

                          Georgia Jewel 50 M (Sept 24)

                          Pinhoti 100 (November 5)

Do you think that recipe would work w/o the protein powder? I suppose I should just try it. I have everything except the protein powder. Oh and I think my dates (medjool) are the carbier ones.

Never tried without the protein powder. But by the looks, I'd say if you omitted that and the water, added some oats, and baked in the oven, you'd basically have granola.

MTA: the protein powder is what mixes with the water and honey to make a brownie batter-like consistency. So, no, I don't think it would work quite right without it.

The solution?  Go to sleep.  Late-night snacking doesn't happen if you're asleep.
