Who all is here and what are you doing? (Read 16052 times)

Hi, I'm Jennifer...36yo SAHM to 4 boys. We live in San Diego and my dh is a lifeguard while I homeschool my 3 oldest. I've been running here and there for the last 14 years. I run 5 days a week...I get my long runs by myself, but the other 4 days I run pushing a jogger while my boys ride their bikes. Last year I had this brilliant idea to do a half marathon. It was a lot of fun. So, I signed up for the Rock N Roll marathon here in June. I just did my second half marathon a couple of weeks ago and felt much better than I did after the first hm! Anyway, I found this site while trying to find a place to keep a running log. This will be my first marathon, so I'm excited/nervous. The run doesn't worry me, it's standing at the start line with 20,000 other people!

Jennifer--welcome to the forum, and good luck on your marathon! The RNR San Diego is a blast, and you'll actually find that the start of a marathon is a lot of fun. And what a high you'll have when you see and cross the finish line! Keep us posted on how your training is coming, and we'll be anxious to get a report from you when the race is over.

Hello, I am an ordinary 35 year old who runs to stay in shape. ALthough my twin brother and I did finish the 2001 Cleveland marathon, I usually stick to the 5Ks in the summer. I teach elementary PE and try to set an example for living healthy. I disagree with Sir Charles (Barkley), if younger people look up to you, you ARE a role model. Great Site. Hope to start running outside soon!

Hi, All! I'm a 33 y/o female back-o-the-packer. I've been running for 8 months now and am starting to get addicted! I just got a heart rate monitor and plan on using it this summer to build up my aerobic base (which right now just stinks!). I have been running for about 10 years now. 3 years ago my wife talked me into trying a marathon; we are at 5 now, with a goal of joining the 50 State Club. I have been on the injured reserve list since last November with P.F. and have just started running again. Going from training runs of 20 + miles to sucking wind at 2.5 miles sure hurts!

Welcome. It'll come back--just a function of time and training, as I'm sure you know. BTW--good friend of mine is a podiatrist, and he tells me that the #1 ailment he sees people for, across all ages, is P.F. Experienced it myself a couple of years ago. Not fun, but it eventually went by the wayside. Good luck with your training, and good running.

Hi, all...just discovered this site a week or so ago and, BOY, am I ever glad I did--what a fantastic resource! I'm Kirsten (zoom-zoom is a reference to our new "baby," a Mazda 3 hatchback), 33 year old mom of one VERY energetic little rascal boy (5 going on 15). I have returned to running after a 15 year hiatus and THIS time around it is SO much more enjoyable. 3 years ago I cut out junk carbs (white sugar, white flour, white rice, etc) from my diet and started really watching how much I ate. No more processed, filler foods...lots of veggies and salads (things I hadn't been good about eating, before). For the past 2 years I have maintained a 50# weight loss, but still have 10-15#s I would like to be rid of--and I just plain want to be in better physical condition all-around. All through jr. high and HS I ran track. The 100, 200, 4x100, and 4x200 were my events (especially loved the 200). I probably would have been better at those events had our coaches provided us with appropriate workouts, but I hailed from a VERY distance-oriented school, so everyone pretty much went on the same workouts for every practice. Those workouts were so brutal on me. I couldn't keep up with those distance folks who ran more-or-less year 'round. I ended up with terrible shin-splints and rock-hard calves that made every stride agonizing. And I now think not having proper shoes for MY feet may have played a major role, too. Every season we got a great discount from Eastbay Athletics, since the entire team was outfitted with the same shoes. When I started back to running I ordered a pair of New Balance 845s based-upon recommendations from running friends, the shoe description, and the wide widths. I LOVE my shoes. I bought them online and I swear it's like they were custom made for my duck-feet. I had been working-out on-and-off over the years, but made a committment to start REALLY running on the first day of Spring. So I started with the 3rd week of the Couch-to-5k program and haven't stopped running since. It just feels great...no more pain, I'm able to go for longer distances and every week it gets easier and I enjoy it more. I can tell my lungs are getting stronger, too. I am mildly asthmatic, so I was concerned that my breathing would be an issue, but it really hasn't been (even in the midst of high allergy season). I'm certain that running slowly, at my own pace, is also greatly benefitting me this time around, too. I'm currently running 3x/week...a little over 3 miles at a 12 minute pace. I'd like to be faster, but I'm really more concerned now with increasing my miles. I want to start doing 4-5 runs/week in the coming weeks, increasing my distance by a combined mile or two each week. I plan to run some 5 and 10ks over the Summer months and would like to be able to run at least 7-8 miles comfortably by the end of Summer. My long-term goal is to run the 5/3 Riverbank 25k Run next spring with my best friend. She did it this year and really inspired me. Hopefully I can run quite a bit during the Winter, but I have been needing new cross-country ski boots and bindings for a LONG time, so now I have a good excuse to do so--snow won't stop me from getting a good workout in. Maybe someday I will think about a marathon, too, but I'll contemplate that once I've completed a 15.5mi. race. k
