when to stretch??? (Read 1683 times)

Good to hear from other non-stretchers. Not stretching doesn't have to be a guilty secret any more for me. I skipped stretching a few times when I had very limited time for my runs. I felt better than when I stretched (either after warming up a bit or post-run). Haven't stretched for a few months now and no looking back. I do start and end my runs pretty slowly. The middle part isn't all that fast either come to think of it. Wink

Non stretcher here too. Since I quit, all my little nagging pains and injuries have disappeared. I was just causing more stress to muscles that were trying to heal on their own. Just my experience.... Tim

Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way - Run often and run long, but never outrun your Joy of running!

Great thread. Let me get this right, some seasoned runners here are against stretching. No one said that but thats the picture im getting. I though stretch was gospel...wow.

I'd say that it's between stretching and whether or not it's good to take days off from running as the 2 most controversial topics I've seen on running forums. These are the two I've seen discussed over and over, with strong opinions on both sides. This leads me to believe that it works for some and not for others. The lessen here is to learn what works for you and what doesn't rather than baseing your decisions on what everyone else does. As for me, I don't stretch much and never have, which is not to say that I never do it at all. I might spend 2-3 minutes max at the end of some runs doing some very light stretching, but not before a run and never what would you would call a stretching routine that takes several minutes.

I consider yoga and stretching my cross-training. Tongue I do both at night after my bod has had a full day to get loose. I find for me, stretching helps me keep my form while running. Not everyone needs that. Bad form = injuries for me. Each person is different; it is hard to say what is right for you. But full stretching routine while cold -- ouch that hurts just to think about it.

I do some light stretching every day. Some people don't seem to be able to manage without 20 minutes of it and are horrified by the thought of not stretching. Others don't stretch and aren't any worse for it. Different strokes for different folks. I train in racing flats, some people don't seem to be able to run without heavy motion control shoes. Everyone is different. Do what works best for you.

I don't stretch, ever. Never have, even when playing other sports like basketball and baseball. It just never feels good so I don't do it. I understand how it could benefit some people, but it does me no good. For me, stretching = bad news.

Just because running is simple does not mean it is easy.

I stretch just about everyday. As for preparing for my runs. I warm up first and then spend 10 minutes stretching and then after running and cool down, i rerpeat the stretching. I may also stretch again at home while camped in front of the TV with my coach potatoe wife. I've stuck to this routine all year and it's the first year I haven't been plaqued by injuries. Although, I will say that now that I'm doing a lot of threadmill workouts (I hate the cold) I have ben skipping the streching at the begining of my workout.

I do stretch a little bit before a run, but not much. I stretch a lot afterwards. I haven't hurt myself. I have sore knees but that's not a stretching injury. I do practice yoga though, so I try to make sure I'm always "feeling stretched" if that makes any sense.

I always stretch hamstrings, calves, quads and hips only after running...takes about 10 minutes. I do always seem to be a little stiff and sore no matter what though so I have decided to try an experiment and stop stretching for a few weeks to see if I have less overall soreness/stiffness from running. If I live....I will post my results.
Well, crap! All along I believed my MS, HS, and college gym teachers. I've been stretching before my runs since I started running a few months ago.
Me, too. And I've been having some sensations that might be stretching related. I'm going to try without for a while. Although I still probably need to stretch my back.
No need to stretch before but dynamic movements that involve mild stretching are just fine. I stretch 5 minutes a day after aerobic or strength training. Not a lot but it helps maintain my flexibility. to each their own, but why do all major college and professional sports teams religiously stretch???? I know people on Green Bay Packers and this year they changed their routine. More yoga, pilates, stretching and core lifting and power lifting and they were one of lowest injury teams in NFL for starting players. This emphasis is not a coincidence I believe.

I strethch and use my foam roller AFTER. I feel weird if I don't. I don't strech a lot, just a few stretches and a couple rolls on the old foamy. If I don't my hips feel like they've fallen asleep. Weird.

Thanks for asking the question...was wondering that myself today since my right leg was so tight when I went out this morning. I used to do light stretches for about 5 min before a run then stretched for about 10 min afterward. I quit after I noticed I seemed to feel worse after the really long runs. standard disclaimer...I'm not an expert or high mileage runner by any 'stretch' of the imagination, YMMV.
