A while back we rented the movie, "Serenity." I liked it, but because I had never seen the "Firefly" TV series I think a lot was lost on me. For Christmas my little brother bought us the entire series (ie the one season that was produced before the asshats at FOX cancelled it). WOW. I am SO hooked! We are only through the pilot about half of the episodes, but I am already dreading finishing the set and knowing that there aren't any more episodes. Hubby also bought the "Serenity" DVD, yesterday, so I do look foward to watching that, again, once we watch all of the TV series.
Oh...and I have the biggest crush on Capt. Mal! He's so charming and snarky!

| I love the movie!!! I liked it so much that I did go ahead and get the series. I like the movie even more after watching the series - the characters really come to life after that. It's kind of an odd blend of country and outer space! Let me know what you think of the movie after you watch the series! |

Yeah, I think I will love the movie all the more after watching the series. I'll bet it's like watching "The X-Files" (now there's another series I was heartbroken to see end. Sunday nights weren't the same for a very long while after that show ended) movie without having ever seen the series. So much of the character development can't be done properly in a film like that, so a lot of little inside jokes and things would be lost.
Speaking of characters, I think Firefly is SO well cast. I can't imagine any other actors in the various roles. I especially love Kaylee and Simon and the relationship and tension between them.

In my experience, the likelihood of a show being prematurely cancelled is directly proportional to any or all of the following:
1) How good the show is; 2) How smart the show is; 3) How original the show is; or 4) How much you absolutely love the show (and thats the biggie).
As far as I can tell, if I find a rare television program that is good, smart, and original, and I really, really like it, the laws of the universe require that it be canceled within no more than 7.2 seconds.
You think I'm kidding. I'm not. I could list a dozen great shows that - the second I got interested - suddenly vanished. Ever see "Boomtown?" Had Donnie Wahlberg, the guy who played Bubba in Forrest Gump, bunch of other great actors, really different and cool. Best thing I'd seen in years.
Middle of the second season - poof. No explanation at all.
Meanwhile, the 348th season of "Real World" just started on MTV. "The Bachelor" won't die. "Big Brother" rears it head every summer.
These days, I just avoid all good shows, and make a note to get them on DVD after they've survived 5 or 6 seasons. I haven't seen one second of "Lost," for example. All of you people who like that show really owe me big time. If I watched it, it'd be gone already.
I don't remember "Serenity," but I probably saw an episode. Probably liked it. That's the only explanation.
The only reason "24" is still on the air is that I make a point of loudly complaining about all the stupid parts (and there's plenty of them). So that the microphones in the TV can hear me. It seems to help.
Note: if any of you are fans of Showtime's "Weeds," don't get too attached. It's days are numbered. |

I remember before that show came out that Newsweek was predicting that it would be a major hit...so I avoided it, as I hate getting hooked on a great show and then having to watch its demise, even after a lot of seasons.
But I think you're right. Reality TV has really been the death of a LOT of quality, smart entertainment.
Though I must admit that I do like watching The Real World--mostly because it's a chance to live vicariously the crazy college years that I didn't really have (hard to be wild when one's a commuter student and living at least 30 minutes from campus). I always feel like such a responsible, mature person when I partake of an average episode of that show.

I got hooked on the series shortly after the television episodes aired. I'm not a Joss Whedon fanboy (never watched Buffy or Angel) but I loved the Firefly series. The movie did a great job of wrapping up the story and closing the book on things that the TV show never got a chance to address.
Oh, and I have serious crushes on both Morena Baccarin and Jewel Staite. |

Yeah, Buffy and Angel never appealed to me--all that vampire stuff just gives me the heebs.
You have great taste...I think those gals are gorgeous (Morena in a very exotic sense and Jewel in that cute, best friend sort of way). Zoe, too...did you know that she's Laurence Fishburne's wife? I think they met on the set of one of the Matrix sequels.

Yup..., that was such a cool show...too bad none of the other networks picked it up. I'm concerned that The Office will face the same fate (the US version, i know they copied from the Brits version but the second and 3rd season the US version have developed its own persona). If you haven't check it out, look for Rob & Big on MTV, its freakin hilarious.
oh and JK, don't watch Lost, I keep running into those actors/actresses in random places here in hawaii but haven't run into Evangeline Lilly yet, so i'd like the show to keep going till i get to meet her .
Good shows do have a shelf-life, i think 5 or 6 seasons before things start going downhill fast where they have to do something drastic to try and revive the shows. ER definately should have been unplugged about 5 years ago, Real World after the Las Vegas season is just a copy (sleep with as many people as you can, including roomates). My other favorites are Scrubs (which will end either this year or next year) and Entourage (probably slightly longer shelf-life due to having smaller number of episodes per year). |

I am a huge Serneity/Firefly fan and I swear I could just sit and start at Captian Mal all day long
I reckon that sometimes its better for a show to have a couple of really good seasons and go out with everyone wanting more than to keep dragging on with the storylines slowly going downhill. I'm also a massive fan of Scrubs and the first few seasons still have me in stitches but something seems to happen to shows after a while where they focus more on the characters personal lives than the things that made the show in the first place and they start turning into a soap opera where a season is just one long episode with a few other things thrown in.
I personally find these things better/funnier when each show is a little story in its own right but then maybe I just don't like thing with too much depth Its also the reason I reckon the Simpsons has lasted as long as it has - nothing ever changes in Springfield. |

AD is hilarious, but I don't get The Office. I LOVE Steve Carell and bought the first season sight-unseen for my hubby for Christmas, since his co-workers all raved about it and have similar senses of humor.
Anyhow...we watched the first 3-4 episodes and gave up. Neither of us were all that entertained by it and found it pretty forced.

Sorry. My bad.
I'd never seen "Scrubs." Ever. Until this year, when I've caught a few re-runs. Great show, really different, and really funny. So of course it'll be canceled.
I saw one episode of Arrested Development. Again, I apologize. It was an accident.
And yes, I also control the weather.
Anybody catch that show with Taye Diggs and some ridiculously hot chick, sort of a combination of "The Shield" and "Groundhog's Day?" Might have been called "Daybreak" or something similar? We watched the first episode. Really complicated, really interesting. Within 10 minutes, I knew it was doomed. Sure enough, didn't last to the fifth episode, I don't think.
I wonder .... if I could watch MTV all day long, could I destroy the whole network? Would it be worth it? And would I finally see a music video on the channel? Or would my head explode first?

I too rolled my eyes when Firefly came out. Then, with nothing better to do, I caught a matinée of Serenity and loved it. If you heard a deafening SLAP sound coming from the direction of Kentucky sometime in 2005, that was me falling in love with yet another stupid sci fi franchise. I went straight from the theater to the interwebs and put the Firefly DVDs in my Netflix queue.
Oh, and you ladies can have your Captain Malcolm. Zoe, Inara, and Kaylee are each eye-candy-licious in their own way. Even the monstrously annoying River had her moments. But more than being a show about hot babes in spaceships, I thought it was incredibly smart, well written, well produced, and witty. Firefly made me rethink my anti-Buffy position. I still think Angel is an abominable show, but I've slowly, s-l-o-w-l-y warmed to Buffy.

BTW, did anyone else discover that Jayne is played by the same actor (Adam Baldwin...not a Baldwin brother) who portrayed that creepy, dastardly Knowle Rohrer on The X-Files? I kept thinking he looked familiar, but I was stunned when I looked at his IMDB entry and discovered that. He looks better and much less creepy in his scruffy Firefly guise.
