knees starting to swell again (Read 629 times)

Hi Smile I've had some trouple with my knees from overtraining in the past (right knee got some kind of fold inside, I had it scanned, and was swelling, left knee didn't hurt that much but was also swelling) to the point where I could only walk fast for 20 mins and my right knee would hurt so much I was limping. So I'm super carefull not to let that happen again. I've build it up again slowly and am now able to do 4-5 walk/runs (run a bit, walk a bit...) a week. I get up to 30 - 40 km a week. But my knees are swelling just a bit again now after the walk/runs. My shoes are up to 820 km now. I know you normally say they are fine for about 1000 km, but should my shoes already be replaced? at least half of the km I've put in them are walking. Does that matter or does walking put the same stress on the shoe as running? What would you recomend? TIA Wink

Hi, 1000km sound like a lot of distance to put on a pair of shoes. I know a lot depends on your body type and the quality of the shoes, but I think most people get 300-500 miles ( 480-800 km ) out of a pair. Having the correct type of shoe makes a difference too. A good running store should be able to tell you if you need a support shoe, a cushioned shoe, or a neutral shoe. Are you taking any anti-inflammatories for the swelling? How about icing your knees? When I had knee issues, I read an article that said to ice your knees both before and after your run, so I tried that and it worked well for me. Finally, when you said you have some sort of a fold inside your knee, are you talking about a plica? That's what I had, and I tried dealing with it for 20 years, but it only got progressively worse with time, so I finally had it removed a few months ago with good results. Should've had it done a long time ago. You may want to talk to your medical professional about a surgical option. Good luck!
I have had my running stile analized and have special soles in the shoes. So that's in check Wink I went to a sports doctor with my knee and I can't remember what he called it - that fold. He gave me some meds to take away the inflamation and said that the fold hopefully would go away with the fluit in the knee disapearing and if I cut back a lot on my training. It worked. I haven't had any problems since. I'm not taking anything except MSM. These are the clamed benefits: • Strengthens connective tissues. • Supports healthy joints. • Maintains structure of proteins. Anything else I should considder? If you think 1000km is too much I think I need to replace my shoes. It's difficult to see if the shoes are worn out but they do look used on the heel.

My opinion would be to replace your shoes, given the amount of miles you have on them. And if you do have a plica, which is basically a fold in the membrane which covers your knee joint area, yes, for years I managed it by resting, taking anti-inflammatories, and icing it. But as I got older, that fold got thicker and tougher, and every time that it became irritated, it got harder and harder to get it to go away. My suggestion would be to work on strengthening the muscles around your knee. Ice your knees after every run, even if they don't feel like they need it. Take an anti-inflammatory as needed.
            Thank you very much Smile

Whats the difference between a sports medicine MD and an orthapedic specalist? I would tend to lean towards an orthapedic MD for joint pain and especially if you know you have a problem. Ask around and find a reputable orthapedic MD who specailzes in knees. You dont want to make things worse. Just my 0.2. DB

Sports Medicine MD specializes in getting athletes back on the road ASAP. They understand the mind frame of an athlete. I had an awesome experience with my Sports doc. I have a feeling if I had seen a regular orthapedic specialist my physical therapy wouldn't of been as agressive as it was and I wouldn't be back on the road doing what I'm doing so soon.
