| Anyone else run with loosely tied shoes? (Read 844 times) |

I am a relatively new runner and have wide feet. I bought my shoes from a running store and feel confident that they are the right shoes for me, but I can't tie them very tight and I am worried that I am not getting the support I should. If I do tie them tighter, I develop pains in my feet when I run. On the other hand, when they are loose I notice my left foot going numb after about a mile.
Any suggestions??

| Actually, you should not tie your shoes tight. You need to tie your shoes such that you can insert a finger atop your foot once tied. As you run, your foot swells a bit to fill the space. You will still get the support you need. |

| Is it also true that tying your shoes too tight can lead to other problems, such as shin splints? |

| I dont know about shin splints but I used to get a lot of ankle pain from having my shoes tied too tightly. |

Tie 'em tight enough that your heels don't slip and loose enough that your feet don't go to sleep. If you need to play with different lacing techniques to get them to feel right then it may be time to get a pair of shoes that fit properly.

I have wide feet and have a heck of a time finding a shoe that feels right. I just don't lace the last two holes nearest the toes, keep the laces semi loose and have found that works great for me. It's a loose fit, but not slipping.
Are your shoes wides?

Yep, my shoes are wides and I actually get them a half size bigger than what I wear to have room for inserts i put in. I am going to try different techniques of lacing and see if that helps.

I often run short distances, cool downs and such, in shoes that are not tied or shoeless in a grassy area. As far as I know New Balance seems to have the most extensive wide shoe collection.
Of course I also walk everywhere without tied shoes, even when I wear nice shoes I usually forget to tie them.

nope, the laces in my asics are such that they stay put when unlaced, just the tips of the laces sticking out of the last hole with a bunch of small hills over the tongue. Usually around retirement time they start slipping out a little more frequently. |

I buy mine 1/2 sz bigger too. Before I re-laced my shoes, I was having all kinds of problems, including numb feet and feeling like there were "rocks" in my shoes. Lacing cured it.

I get that as well and sometimes it feels like my socks are all bunched up. It took awhile for me to realize that my socks were indeed sitting flat and not bunched. Never thought the shoes being laced too tightly was the problem. |

| I run with mine snug, so they're like part of my feet. Otherwise there's real danger of twisting an ankle on roots / rocks on trail as the shoe and foot roll in different directions or at different rates. |

I have high arches so if they are too tight I get all sorts of trouble. BUT, I also wear motion control shoes, so wouldn't tying them loosely negate the benefit of the shoe construction? |
