Michelle --- can't remember if I said this before, but long(er) flights are usually more comfortable than shorter flights ... movies, food, booze, etc. Plus, they aren't those tiny communter planes, which are loud and kind of 'shakey.'

    Totally agree!
We went to Germany on SAS - good food with wine, you have your own TV screen in front of you with 8 movies to choose from, games to play etc. etc. And you have time to really settle in, since the flight was 10 hours.

Michelle, you will have a blast!

Driving in Ireland was great for me and the wife, and with a local giving you directions you shouldn't think twice.Kilmainham Gaol is a worthwhile stop in Dublin, and is in the same general direction as Guiness. It doesn't sound like you'll make it too far West, but Dingle Penninsula was our favorite part of the trip. You're making me crack open the photo album now. I'm getting jealous!

Looks like the trip will start during the first week of April.

I would really like to plan to meet up with some fellow RA members for a run here or there. For the sake of meeting new people and getting to run, and to allow me a reason to take some time for myself (away from my aunt and uncle) while we're there.

I'll be staying at the consulate in Belfast - Is anyone from RA close to there? I won't have a car of my own but I think I'll be able to get rides to and from places.

I'm excited but the more I think about it the more I worry about how much time this is to spend with my aunt and uncle. Oh, and I suppose I'll miss my evil children. This will be the first time in 16 years that I've gone childless (for more than a few days that is).

I am really hoping to plan some RA meet ups.

I understand the family aspect of this, but I'll work out, and you'll enjoy the break from the kids. The chance for an RA meet up to do some running with some locals would be awesome! Big grin

Mississippi, your arrival couldnt be better, that Sunday the Great Ireland 10k run is scheduled for the amazing setting of the Phoenix Park in Dublin (Europes largest city park - and stunning environment).

It looks amazing but when looking at the entry form it asks for my county for the shirt that I'll receive ahead of time that represents where I'm from. I didn't see any options for anything outside of Ireland, am I just missing something?

They have set up an inter-county thing where everyone (from Ireland) state their county of origin, they receive a t-shirt and chip timer in the post and each county's average is obtained at the end and a winner announced...its an idea they came up with a few years back (but not everyone participates in it)..

Let us know if you decide to enter, i'll introuduce you to the gang, and we can get a post-run Guinness.

Once I get confirmation from my aunt on the exact dates I'll register for this race, it sounds like fun. I'll e-mail someone from the race to find out about getting t-shirt without a specific county on it....or I'll just have to choose Belfast since that's where I'll be staying.

I'd really enjoy meeting up and have a Guiness, although that's a far cry from the light beer I'm used to!!!

Enjoy yourself in Ireland. I went in October/November. Didn't see too much of Belfast, as it took forever to get out ot Dublin. Don't worry about the Guinness. It's much lighter than people think. It's dark because the grains are roasted longer.

Guinness Guinness Draught 4.0% alcohol 125 calories 10 carbs
    to compare:
    Miller Miller Lite 4.2, 96, 3.2
    Budweiser (U.S) Budweiser 5.0 143 10.6

Where in Ireland are you going?

Wow, lots of carbs, sounds like a nice carbo-load! I've never had a Guiness, I should try one here first so I don't make a funny face when I have it there!

I'll be staying in Belfast. We'll also travel over to Scotland too. I've never been overseas so this is all very exciting but has me very nervous.

    Well, I predict fun.
We visited Giant's Causeway and the Bushmills distillery while up that way.
    Never been to Scotland.
By all means, practice with some Guinness here, either in a bar or the pub draft cans or bottles. Pub draft isn't the same as Guinness Extra Stout in the bottle, which is sometimes available in distributors. The pub draft containers have a widget which releases nitrogen upon opening which mixes with the CO2 to give Guinness Draft its delightful creamy head.

One tip: Count on everything being a lot of money. Shocked You go, US dollar Angry! Really, my wife and I were suprised at the prices, even though we were advised ahead of time about them. But don't let that stop you from having fun. Who knows? Maybe the dollar will pick up.

Another tip: We used ATM machines there vs. exhanging $. Worked great. Your bank/credit card most likely charges a 3 percent credit/debit card transaction fee. Still, was just handy to use the plastic.

I have soooo much to learn. My aunt's friend is the American Consulate stationed in Belfast and we'll be staying there with her. I'm hoping to get some well-guided tours from her for the first few days before I get to venture out on my own. I still want to research a lot before I go, and currency value is definitely something I need to be aware of.

Does anyone know how easy it is to get around without having my own vehicle? Are there taxi cabs? Guess I could just run everywhere! Smile
