40s+ on the Run - Happy New Year! (Week of 12/30/07) (Read 1379 times)

Lola Glittertush here. Looks like I missed the stripper episode, but that was too good to pass up. (Apparently I am a female impersonator and not a Chippendales guy. Roll eyes ) Do you think it's too late to change my login name? Hmm. What to do with this. I have gained about 5 to 10 pouinds over the past month. My sister, who has a few marathons under her belt, saw me this past week and told me I look much better at this weight, and in fact didn't recognize me when she saw me a couple of times two years ago (I was pretty skinny then). And I like the way my face looks (if not my gut, particularly) at this weight as well, and it seems that I can run as fast at this weight for races up to 10k as I can 20 pounds lighter. So I guess when this headcold clears out and I start running again, I'm going to keep the healthy calories coming in so that I don't lose weight. Whoda thunkit? Here's hoping 2008 finds everyone healthy and happy and doing their running happydances. bty

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! Shell, my daughter is 18. Here is her New Years Eve fiasco. My sister and her husband were going to the House of Blues in Orlando for the Big Friggin' Eve rock concert. They invited my daughter and she was ecstatic. She loves the hard rock bands. Anyway....my sister and her husband are GOOD friends with Sevendust so my daughter would have access to go backstage and whatnot. So...she gets to meet the entire band, hang out, do lunch, watch them do the sound check, take pictures, basically felt like a rock star herself, she's in her glory. Here's where it gets good.....the first band comes on at 9:00, the second band comes on around 10:30. My daughter is in heaven walking around, going back stage, and feeling "special". So at around 11:30 my sister decides to buy a beer and hand it to my daughter so she can have a couple of sips and do a toast at midnight. The 3rd and main band (Sevendust) comes on at 11:45 and she gets to listen to them play one of her favorite songs. Her and my sister are suppose to head backstage at this time because they are going to do the countdown and they get to go on stage with the band and do it with them in front of a "gazillion" people. Just as she is almost backstage security snags her and asks for her I.D. My sister is freaking out saying that she is just holding that beer for me. They said no, we saw her take a sip. They escorted my daughter out of the House of Blues and she was not allowed back in the rest of the night. Minutes later she could here the band counting down to midnight as she's standing outside with my sister. She only got to hear 1 song from them and spent an hr. and a half outside. Of course my sister stayed out there with her because she wouldn't leave her alone. So....a lesson learned, the security was great, my sister thinks she's a bad aunt now and they missed the best part of the night. My sister said to me, no wonder I don't have kids, I would make a horrible parent. Like I said, a lesson learned. Oooops, almost forgot this was a running website. Been in and out of town most of the week so nothing spectacular to report. My husband and I just covered up alot of our plants/palms as we are getting a freeze tonight. Yep, it is gonna be cold. I'm gonna have to call this a state of emergency. Jewels
But in the end, I'm more afraid of not trying, than failing. JJJessee

Dang, we're a chatty group! You parents are so brave! I would be terrified to have a teenager, considering what a joy I was to have around at that age...not. Running in LA was not a big deal for me, I grew up there, so maybe my lungs are scarred or something. Actually the air quality was good last week, better than here in Fresno. The tread was ok, but I wouldn't want to make a steady diet of it. Had a quiet New Year's eve, made margaritas using fresh lemons from mom's Meyer's lemon tree (Meyer's are fairly sweet), had one and a half and crashed just at midnight. Woohoo. Guess I'm not the party animal I was at 18 Wink I also signed on for the 1000 mi in 2008 group, I'm on track while it's cool, we'll see how it goes when it's 115F! Arla

Leslie, this stripper name thing is too funny not to share in a new thread? Hilarious !!!
I started a thread under the "Off the Beaten Path" forum. I agree with Arla - I don't know how you parents do it. I always wanted to kids, but now I don't know how I would ever do it. Life would definitely be different. Jewels - Definitely a hard lessoned learned. We're suppose to be getting quite a storm blowing through here for the next few days. Hopefully my will to run doesn't blow away with it. Have a good evening, everyone!

              Nothing

Hi Everyone! Another CR refugee joining in on the fun. I was a part of Leslie's NEO group on the Ultra thread and decided to land here. I'm 39 but I read somewhere you round up (I only have 3 months left anyway). I'm a part time ski instructor so last week I was lucky to get 20 miles in between work and snow. Now it's freezing cold but still went out tonight and did 4 miles. I like the stripper names! I went back to figure out what mine would be-Dallas Lustytush! Big grin I like it and I think my SO would agree. I should have used my stripper name as my log in name but chose Ultrachick instead. I do prefer the longer distances and am contemplating my first 100 miler this year-in celebration of turning 40! So Happy New Year! Call me Dallas Lustytush, Ultrachick or as Leslie knows me as Kelly (kelywil). Now to figure out how to download my running log and get back on track! (because of the CR shut down I didn't keep diligent track of my miles for the year so I ended up 4 miles short of 2400! If they could just have waited....)Smile Kelly

                ...And I do.

So Happy New Year! Call me Dallas Lustytush, Ultrachick or as Leslie knows me as Kelly (kelywil). Kelly
Big grin Hi Dallas! Bummer on the mileage quota. I worked to get over 600 miles and was so proud of THAT -- You must be some ULTRCHICK! Wink PS -- Leslie, you are da bomb!

                  ...And I do.

Indulge me, you guys as I play with my new found skill!
Hi all! Tim...er, I mean, Kip Rockdale here! What an interesting twist things have taken while I wandered off. Shocked Getting ready to head out and run in the 20-something degree weather (better than the > 0 wind chill of the past few days!). The airdyne helps but just isn't the same... We all survived NYE--the 18 y.o. DD went to southern IN with a friend so I was just happy to get her back home with all her teeth and no tatoos! Wink DW and I watched the ball drop, kissed good-night and shut off the lights at 12:01. Sorry we're so boring. Blush I'm coming off some knee problems over the past couple of months. I got new running and trail shoes (Brooks GTS 8 and Adrenaline ASR 4's) but I think it may be my street shoes. I changed jobs and started wearing my old Foot-joy street shoes and I think they may cause some lateral movement that puts stress on my knee. Anyone else ever have an issue with that? Nice being back, take care all! Tim C.

Hi Kelly! If you're interested, I started the Neo thread here, too. Click "User Groups" above, put in the search box "Trail Running," and then join the group. I don't really understanding the whole "joining" thing, but it's the only way to access the user groups. It's a nice community going there. Also, quite a few CR trail runners moved over to www.runnersworld.com. Tim - So far I think you're the only guy who's first stripper name is actually a guy's name. Kip Rockdale - Maybe you should be trying out for Chippendale's or The Thunder From Down Under. Cool Laid in bed for an extra 45 minutes this morning, until meowing noises just about drove me nuts. Helped me get up and out the door, though. (For those of you who don't know me very well, I have 5 black - yes, 5 - cats. It's a zoo at my house during feeding time! Anyway, I digress . . . It is freaking windy here today! This morning was Tempo Run Morning, and I tell ya, it's awful hard to keep up a fast tempo when facing 20+ mph winds with gusts between 25-30 mph. Cripes! It was cold, thankfully, and I seriously overdressed. I'd been home, showered, etc., for about an hour and I still had a red face. Well, gotta go and get some work done around here, since that's what I get paid to do. Have a good one!

Happy almost Friday! Think I'm rushing things a bit? Brian, is it cold enough for you up in Albany today? Those extra few lbs. will keep you well insulated, so keep 'em on! Jewels, that was some lesson your daughter learned! Too bad for her, but bravo for security doing their job! She still had a lot of neat things happen for her that night, so not all was lost. Too bad for you sister as well, but that was awesome of her to stick with your daughter! Arla, congrats on the 1000 mile goal! Get all your 1000 miles in before the heat in June then just hang out the rest of the year! Wink Kelly, welcome! I'm glad you found us! I think you'll like the training log here! Tim, my podiatrist said if you can hang out in running shoes all day, that would be best for your feet. So yeah the street shoes may be your issue if you walk around in them a lot during the day. Can you try some inserts for them? Leslie, living with the wind is a fact of life where I am. Usually when its really bad here, I duck into the woods to run. Its amazing what a difference that makes. Isn't it fun explaining to people who ask you "why is your face so red"? Did my usual swim with the master's group this AM and cranked out 4600 meters in the 1.5 hour session, a new high for me. My coffee consumption afterwards was also a new high.... must...stay....awake...at....work... I hope everyone's 3rd day of the new year is a good one! -Bob

www.runningforums.com? Is that place any good?
They have some pretty cute doodads: http://www.runningforums.com/uploads/smilies.php I am in heaven! I found a new local station that plays all easy listening aka elevator music. Ha! I've been an elevator music fan since I was a kid. We're talking Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Diana Ross, etc. I know, I'm sick. But I'm so happy!!
