Race morning...
sleep 4.5 hours. Woke up around 3:30 AM layed in bed until just before 4:30

I feel rested. I htink the 10 hours the day before was a good thing.

I had my breakfast of kashi go lean and grapenuts trailmix crunch with some raisins and 1/2 banana and oj...

and a small cup of Coffee (yes kenyan)

It is raining. Radar shows it is raining in toledo and monroe MI pretty hard so I'm not sure there is a chance it will clear up for the race.

It is currently 43 degrees and raining... I expect it to be high 40's low 50's for the race... what to wear? Do I wear my pull over that is mostly waterproof? hm... I'll pack it and a variety of cloths... and make the decision closer to race time...

ok... 20 minutes until my ride picks me up... I am going to try to convince my body to control the adrenaline... don't use it up this morning... save some for mile 20... ;)

ok... the next time I check in It will be to post results... and a race report to follow...

I'm glad my buddy allen is picking me up... takes a ton off my mind... where to park... etc... etc...
and a friend has an office down right by the race start where we can stash our stuff and use the rest rooms... which will be nice. A bunch of my running club will be there as well so the last minute encouragement will be cool...

Go me!

I wish I'd been there to hear that as the line started forming in front of the finish line. No idea what I'd have done about it, but I wish I'd heard it in person instead of 3rd party.

Wow. Beautiful effort and a really super first marathon. Heck, I'd love to have that one for my second.

Sounds like you paced it perfectly. Nearly a perfectly even split first and second half.

Race morning Pre-race
My buddy picked me up at about 5:15... and we headed off. A friend from our running club put together a few corporate teams for the 10k and we got to crash their breakfast gathering. Which meant we were 1 block from the start and had a private bathroom... which meant I drank my gatorade about 40 minutes before race time... hit the bath room 15 before race time and walked over to the start.

Another member of the running club brought garbage bags and I took one and poked holes for my arms and head. It was raining pretty good and was just a tad under 50 degrees. I got to the finish line about 5 minutes before the start. Settled in with the 3:50 pace leader. Asked if they were running even splits or slightly faster the 1st half. He said even. However I have had experience with this pacer before and he went out 15 seconds a mile too quick in a pace group for a 1/2 for the first 3 miles. So I figured they would go too fast the first mile and then even it out...

The race didn't start until about 8 after there were a couple wheel chair races that were late to start.

The gun went off.. I walked most of the way to the start... (that was all I could do)... and then clicked my watch as I passed the start.

1st few miles
I felt like I was running too quick yet I almost immediately lost sight of the 3:50 group. After the first turn I saw them they were about 75 yard ahead of me. But my garmin went off just short of the mile 1 marker at 8:37. Not bad I thought but I wanted to relax a bit more... it was hard to run a tun of slow people running sholder to sholder... I picked it up just a bit to get around some folks here and there... I just wanted a clear path to find my pace...

There was a little hill around the 3 mile mark and it was just a bump compared to my normal runs so I went up it with ease and stayed relaxed.

After the hill I relaxed and found a pace on the gentle down hill. My HR fell and I was enjoying the swish swish sound of a mass of runner running wrapped in plastic...

check down at mile 6
After mile 5 and my garmin said 7:55 and my HR was up in the 160 range I knew I better slow down a bit... so I did.. .running an 8:30 but then found my rythm in the 8:15 range. I somewhere along the line I realized I had passed the 3:50 group... oh well...

mile 10 energy boost
I had experience this in training so I was ready for it. Right around mile 10 I get a burst of energy (man I was primed to run a smoken 1/2). I caught a guy I had conversed with before the start and several time through out the course as we yoyo'ed past each other... exchanging a hello... how you doing each time.

I mentioned I was trying to hold back my 10 mile burst of energy. I cruised through 11 & 12 at 8:09 & 8:07 respectively. Hit 12 and thought I am only about 1/3 through... I settled into a string of 8:15's I felt really good... (8:12, 8:12, 8:16) in this stretch I caugh up to the 3:40 pacers and settled in behind them.

Downhill baby
Then we entered a gentle downhill the rain had stopped the sun was out... I had ditched my garabage bag earlier... perhaps mile 6. Note on hydration... I had been taking poweraide... at ever stop by the 2nd...

16-18 was a gentle down hill and I ditched the 3:40 group...I had planned all along to just let my legs go in this section. If there was any place I was going to run fast this was it. I strung together a goup of 8's 8:06, 7:53, 8:05
Saw my in-laws in mile 19 and ran a 8:12... mile 20 was my euphoric mile (8:10). I was grinning ear to ear as I crossed what in my mind was the 1/2 way point... 6 more to go. I knew I was going to finish. I also knew I only had to run 10's to break 4 hours.

then the wind smacked me in the face... but I pushed through it... (8:25). My legs were getting heavy. I cracked open my sport beens and had 3 or 4. My legs were getting worse. Mile 22 was worse but I got some water and some more beens...
I was slowing. the 3:40 group passed me. I kicked... and held them. I figured HTFU... at least you will break 3:50 if you can hold them for a mile or so... and I clicked off a 9:06. Crap...

The next mile was hard! I was stuggling to keep my legs moving... but I moved the the front of the pace group and took the wind off a girl trying to BQ. (she ran so close to me she actually kicked the bottom of my shoe once... ) I ran tall and tighened my core. I got up on my toes a bit and found some spring in my stride. (8:48-)

With 3 to go I decided I would push just a bit and dropped the 3:40 group again. (8:27) I was yoyo'ing with a guy in yellow about my age perhaps younger.

2 to go... I started slowing again, in my mind I was just trying to hold on until 1.5 to go. The 3:40 pace leader (liz) bless her yelled out ... "3:40 pace group coming up on you." That was all I needed to hear and I found something deep within me and got it back in gear. (8:38-)... and I somehow found a nice stride for the last mile... and was able to push by the yellow guy and never saw him again... (8:17) but I figure I got .4 to go...

I realized I could see the finish... and I kicked a bit more... someone from my running club yells out to me "I told you so (3:40)! then I see another guy who is yelling way to go sobo! .1 to go and I am all out I see my in-laws and my cousin... and see the clock ticking and I know I am going to just miss 3:40 (gun time)... I go under in what I thought was 3:40:04...

I stagger forward. I get my medal. I try to smile but I am too tired.

I see my buddy who was suppose to find me and ride with me on his bike ( left that part out... after mile 5 I figured we would never meet up as he would be looking for me by the 3:50 group).
I give him the one minute finger and point to the banannas... bananna, power aide... a bit of water... I am feeling dizzy and like I am going to hurl... I grab some pretzels... and ask a guy where he got the chocholate milk... grab one and go say hello to my fans... :)

staggering around... my friends helped me sustain my balance... I walked for a bit... drank my milk.. nibbled my pretzels... and came back to life... but my legs were toast.....

and well that is enough for now... garmin data next post... and perhaps some notes about the course...

So, you were trying to break 4 hours and wound up with a 3:38:48!?!  Well done!

And you did it in those conditions!  Man, that weather was a kick in the teeth, wasn't it?
I just did the half, so I was finishing just about the time the sun came out.

Course, then again, if the weather didn't screw with you somehow, how would you know you were in Cleveland?
