Group Running (Read 993 times)

I don't know about anyone else, but I run 10 billion times faster in a group. They push me, I push them, we encourage each other...How do all ya'll singlets do it?

intersting... I use my group to slow down. I run a few runs a week with a group of slower people... almost a forced easy run. I think the key is that the folks who run alone like running and don't need the group to do it. For me I like running alone sometimes. I also like running with people. Thurs, sat, sunday group... monday wed friday alone...

Yea, I need that inspiration and push. I have ran alone and it's ok. I'd rather run with the girls though

That's why I prefer to run alone. If you run with someone, you never run at your true pace. Either you're forced to run to slowly, or too fast, just to keep the company. This may be a good as a social bonding experience, but not as far as your training goes.

When I run alone I prefer to be by myself. MTA: Sorry, that was stupid.

I was ruminating about this the other day. I must be the rookiest runner out here. A bunch of runners do long runs on the beachfront road--local marathon training program puts out water and gatorade, besides, being the beachfront road, there's water fountains and restrooms, and it's a convenient stretch of road, the sun is up early, etc. But everybody passes me. I pass no one. I think, if I was with that group (many of them set out together from the running store a mile away), no way I'd keep my long run pace for long, or else they'd be running too slow. Or something. Maybe I'll get faster or find a plodder like me, but for now it's me and my Garmie. I do sometimes run with a faster friend, and for me that counts as a tempo run.

"If you run with someone, you never run at your true pace. Either you're forced to run to slowly, or too fast, just to keep the company" Sometimes being forced to run fast or slow is a great help to your training. It helps you push yourself to your limits. I don't think you have a "true pace." You pace on how you feel, how long your running, and how fast you can really go. And sometimes it's good to run slow too.

I think the group slows me down also. I prefer to run alone, push myself for the day...not have to worry about staying with anyone else. Although the company is nice. Wish I could find someone to run with who is at the same pace as me.... Sad CC

Vixi, it's not you, its just the wrong group! I find the chatting slows me down in a group, and I feel more tired at the end than if I had done the same run alone. Nice for a change, but not really my thing.

I usually run slower with my group. I run with them probably 3 times a week - mainly social. But then I also get days like Wednesday where there were a few faster runners with the group that pushed the pace. We took off and probably held a 7:45 pace for 6 miles wehre the rest of the group probably was going 8:20-8:30s.

I've done two group runs with a local running store. Neither time went well. It was a mixed group of runners and walkers, and my pace just happened to be the slowest runner, but much too fast to walk. I ran the whole 5 miles by myself :-/ I'm giving another group a shot tomorrow morning, and I hope I have a better time. I really think I would like to meet a new group of runners and workout with them. Typically, I run by myself or with one friend.

I am definitely a loner for runs. I get to do my own thing, my own pace, my own route...it's all about me. I have never been bored on a run yet. I don't know exactly what I think about but it's apparently enough to keep me occupied for the hour or two hours. I ran a race with three other guys once. It was fun...it kept me from going too fast and I was actually relaxed for the race. I think I will probably stick with my lone runs though...gives me the much needed me time.

I run with a large group of people 2 times a week. Everyone understands that you may not always run the same pace and you may end up running alone for periods of time. The joy of it though is meeting beforehand and and then afterwards we go out. On the weekend we get brunch and the weeknight run we go for a beer and a bite to eat. I like tyhese days but also like the solo runs so I guess I get the best of both worlds. I like that.

Daddyo- your group sounds fun! i love my running group, but I think about this dynamic sometimes. There have been times that I think my training has been helped by the group- getting through long runs and doing speed workouts. Other times, I let myself go WAY too fast on a long run because no one was running my pace or I just wasn't feeling right, and then I paid the price for it. I think the group dynamic is a good thing mostly. Sometimes I run slower, sometimes faster, and that's exactly what we're supposed to do, isn't it? I've gotten to the place where I can meet up with a certain group and run 6 miles and for them it's easy and social at about an 8min pace, and for me, I let them do all the talking and it's a tempo run. runandsmile920- I also wonder how people who train alone all the time do it.
