Turkey Trot- Down goes 20mins? (Read 176 times)

Well this years Turkey Trot was my last shot at breaking the 20 minute mark in the 5K. I have really put in the miles over the past 4 months and based on my last 5K (20:18-) 6 weeks ago, I felt good about it.

I worked my way up to the third row on the start line to make sure I didn't get stuck behind the masses. I knew that I needed a 6:25 average and didn't have too much wiggle room.

Good start. Pushing but not too hard. Mile 1- 6:25, right on pace.

I thought to myself, "just fall into this pace and push the last 1/4 mile and we will have it!". Mile 2- 6:29, just 1.1 miles left.

Now I knew that I had to push a little harder, which I did. I picked up the pace a little. I knew I was nearing my max but could hold it to the end. I got 20, I know it! It's going to be a great way to end the year.

5:00 into the 3rd mile and I knew I could hold it for 2 more minutes. Made a turn at the 18:30 mark and expected to see the finish. No such luck. The next turn looked to be about a minute ahead, this will be close. Hit the next turn at 19:11 and my heart sunk. No finish line. At least another 2 minutes to the next turn. Well, this BS continued for the next SIX minutes until I finally crossed the finish in 27:11! A 14:15 final 1.1 miles.

Obviously the race was closer to 5 miles then it was 5 kilometers. I was livid for a good hour after the race. I just logged my run as a Tempo to remove any reminder of the race. Just a frustrating experience that I wanted to vent about here as my family really has no understanding "what the big deal it".

I hope everybody had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.

I voiced my displeasure at a few people as I crossed the finish line but they were mostly volunteers so I was just wasting my breath. I shot out an email yesterday to JMS racing and am awaiting on a reply form them.

That really sucks, when you train hard for a 5k that's what you should get. Running a weekly 5k has disadvantaqges (it does take a toll...) but it is the same accurate and certified course week in and week out. My PRs are apples to apples, I either got one or I didn't.

The 5K calendar around here is kinda barren, so most of my training is at an easy pace this time of year. If your mileage is consistent, your rested legs can smash your PR at an early Spring race. Try not to let it get to you, it's 100% beyond your control. Just keep doing what you're doing and keep your eyes on the prize Mike, you'll get it.

That sucks, and I can definitely relate. I was running my own Thanksgiving race, but I had the opposite problem happen. I crossed the finish line and was overjoyed when I saw the time on my watch because it was a big PR. When the post-race euphoria wore off, I started thinking critically and asked the race director. Turns out it was between .1 and .2 miles short.
