Harriers for Hounds 5k (11/27/08) race report (my first race of the weekend) (Read 183 times)

A hippo swimming.
I woke up at the crack of dawn, or so it felt and put on what I thought would be enough clothing to keep me warm for this brisk 5k on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. After the quick drive to the boardwalk, I discovered that I was the first person running the race to show up (it was 7:45, the race started at 8:30). When I asked, they told me that there were about 100 preregistered runners. They expected more to show up and register that morning because it was sunny. I took my number and the very awesome t-shirt they gave out and went to sit in my car because it was COLD.

At about 8:10, I got out of my car and froze my way to the bathroom. Thank goodness it was in a real building with heat, because the breeze off of the ocean was COLD. Have I mentioned how cold it was this morning? At about 8:25 I went to go line up. And then they announced that due to the number of same day registrants, they were delaying the start for 10 minutes. BRRRR. I chatted with the runners around me for a few minutes, turned on my Garmin and jumped up and down.

Finally, they came over and thanked us for coming and told us the course. We were to run to 21st Ave (or Street, I don't remember) and back. The whole course was on the boardwalk. Not very hard to remember.

Then we were off. I was running fast, possibly too fast for me, but it was flat and I wanted to warm up quickly. Suddenly I realized that I was overdressed. Oh well, I kept running. I passed a few people, but mostly we all sort of stayed where we were in line. The boardwalk got narrow, I had completed the first mile (the course wasn't marked at all, so I'm glad that I was wearing my Garmin). All of a sudden we were at the turnaround. Now the breeze would be at our backs (well, more at our backs than it was on the way out). I took of my jacket and kept running fast. Still thinking that I was running too fast. But boardwalks are flat and give a little, so I figured what the heck.

My pace was around 8m/m and I figured that I could probably keep that up. Suddenly, with about 50 yards to go a woman passed me. Drat. I was trying to avoid that happening.

Then it was over.

24:48 according to the official race results. 8/35 in my age group, 17/138 of the women and 53/254 overall.

For some reason I stuck around after the race was over and froze for a while.

Happy Thanksgiving. Smile I've got another race on Saturday!

What a fun race...sounds like conditions were really nice. I tried to talk my brother into a 5k race this AM a few minutes away, but he wasn't game (I think he's afraid that his old sister could kick his butt, heh).

NICE job! Smile

What a chilly start to turkey day, and of all days to get there early and stay late allowing extra time to freeze. Big grin

Wow, nice job! I thought my race was cold, but I'm guessing yours was a little colder! Good luck on your next race on Saturday.
