This was my own personal race of 50k which I did to raise money and awareness for the LAF.
Thanksgiving morning my brother and I got up at 4:00 AM. Ate and headed over to Hinckley Lake. We drove one lap around the lake so he would be more familiar with where I would be running if in case for some reason I didn't show up as expected he could come looking for me.
The course was a 5k loop (just short but I added a little jaunt through the main parking lot to make up the difference).
We started at 5:21 am
The first lap was nice. I felt pretty good I was just trying not to go to fast....
Here I am after the first lap.
And again after 9 miles or lap 3...
I was laughing
The sky was clear and the morning was crisp. It was an amazing sunrise!
The first 5 laps went well... I was reflecting I was enjoying the morning.
ala Ryan Hall on a
Marathon and Beyond
cover from earlier this year.
just rolling along
I kept a nice even pace and was taking a strategy of walking up the one tougher hill... at least part of it... I would run up it until the steeper section or until my HR got to 145 (whichever came first) then I would walk to the not so steep section or until my HR came back to the 130's( whichever was last)
was I off the ground?
I started to feel it in the 7th lap. My quads were really starting to ache. The wheels fell off in the 9th lap. My usual 9:30's dropped off... I ran my slowest mile in this lap 11:55. (I had a 12:48 at mile 22 but that included a trip to a portapottie.)
Here I am before the start of my last lap.
...
At the top of the last big hill
and at the finish line
Doing that... running all by myself was quite a challenge. I learned a new level of pain. My quads hurt so bad at the end of the run that I really hurt each step. I ran about 4500 feet up and down in the course of this run but I am sure it is this hill that tore up my quads...
it took me 5:08:04 to complete it...
I would write more but I am not sure what to say. It was hard... it hurt... but I am grateful that I got a chance to do it. That I was capable of it...

Thank you for posting this, and congratulations on the accomplishment. Living in Alaska, so the snow and ice are all too familiar sights! Way to go!

What is LAF?
Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Funny story... my kids and wife came up after lap 7 to bring me a refill on the coffee and you should have seen the look on my 6 year old daughter's face when I said "give daddy a kiss" ... lol...

Me, I would have chosen a flat loop. But to each their own.
And thanks for supporting LAF. I do also.

I really enjoyed the report and the pics. Awesome job. I did this on my 33rd birthday this year but instead ran 33 miles. It is awesome running the whole way by yourself. God job and congrats on the distance. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job - I've always wanted to do some sort of crazy solo endeavor. I'm a little jealous of the snow - I love running (or doing anything, actually) in the winter.
