Well, this was my first 10K so I wasnt really sure how it would go or what I could do. My main goal was to try to go under 45:00. According to most of the calculators out there, I should be able to do a 43:48 or so based on my 5K PR of 21:00.
The weather was a bit chilly to start - well at least when we were standing around waiting for the race to start. The family was there at the start waving me on. Man was it crowded at the starting line - with a 10K, HM and full Mary all starting at the same time. I positioned myself between the 6:00 pace and the 8:00 pace expecting to keep around a 7:00 pace, so I was luckily near the front of the pack. I ran into a couple guys I konw from some local 5Ks and wished them luck as I knew one of them was shooting for a BQ.
As the gun went off a mass of people headed down the road. I kept to the right so I could wave to my family and high five my son and then settled in to my pace. For the number of people that were there, it actually cleared out pretty quickly for me and by a quarter mile I had enough room to move around.
Somehow I missed the one mile marker but came into mile two at 14:13 and felt pretty good about that. I wanted to do the next two miles at around a 7:00 pace and was pretty close at 7:03 and 7:04 but at that point I realized how hot it was. I had dressed for much colder weather - hat, gloves, jacket, long running tights and I was starting to feel the sun beating down on me as the wind on this course had died down from what it was like at the start line.
Mile five I kicked up another notch and cleared in 6:53. After that, I must have lost it a bit though I didnt realize it at the time. I wanted to go under a 7:00 pace for the last 2+ miles but the first quarter mile of mile five was an uphill section. I didnt think it hurt me much but my pace slowed down. It was also at this point that the 10K broke off from the pack so I lost all the people I was pacing off of and only had one guy a hundred yards or so ahead of me to gauge myself off of. I slowly gained on him throughout the last mile and almost caught him at the end, but he had a little more kick than I did in the last .1 mile. I finished the last 1.2 miles in 8:55 (7:24 pace - how did I slow down that much?)
Finish time - 44:07. I took 19th overall and 7th in my AG (I must say that the male 30-39 age group just tends to be a lot faster than I am so I cant seem to place). I mean, I fniished in the top 19 and almost half of the people in front of me were in my AG.
Overall I was happy with the run - broke 45:00 which I considered not bad for my first 10K. Got a PR - again it was my first 10K so anything was a PR.
Oh, and if you were there and happened to get the Hyannis Marathon magazine thing they handed out - read the story on the last page (I wrote it).
Keep on running and thanks for reading.

Congratulations on your first 10K! You set out with a goal & a plan and followed through nicely. Congrats on taking 19th place too.
I agree with you, that age group can be a tough crowd. Lots of determined 30 something year olds out there. |

Nice job man. That's a really good time. I've also noticed that in my area, the 30-39 age group is the most competitive it seems. Luckily I still have 2-3 years of training before I'm in there. |
