I like the way you think...except for the Pop-Tarts part. I will substitute Toaster Strudel.

You were the one who listed Pop Tarts.
You are the one who eats them.
All the below is in addition to the standard gu, gatoraid powder, succeed caps, etc.
15-20mile maybe a PB&J and a banana or an orange. 20-30miles I like to add an extra sandwhich and some pretzel's/cookies, 30-50+(depending on the terrain) I have carried a seperate backpack with normal food; ham sandwiches, cookies, 1-2 cans of soda, potatoe chips, chocolate, pizza, banana's, oranges you name it to include a couple of $'s for a quick burger or taco's. Whatever my stomach can handle.

So, FWIW, I just ran a 42 miler the other month with nothing but 2 Gu packets that I could have omitted and come Cokes. Methinks food for the run is overrated. If you are running hard enough that you need to supplement your glycogen, you won't be able to digest real food.
Interesting. For now I'm a better safe than sorry kind of guy. How much fluid did you have for that run?
Drank to thirst, and the run was supported, so I am not sure. Quite a bit of fluid though.
My question is do carbonated sodas hydrate at all or do you drink the purely for the carbs?
A can of Coke contains 12 ounces of fluid. It hydrates well. The diuretic effect of the caffeine is negligible in countering the hydration effect.
Does the carbonation bug you? I love the taste of cola when I am hot and thirsty...if I could figure out a way to carry one without it exploding upon opening from all the jostling, I would. Yummy!
The Coke was waiting at the aid stations (although you could stow it). The carbonation is no major issue.
Are you telling me that, for runs longer than, say 15 miles, I don't need to bring a bunch of food with me and that all I have to do is stow some Cokes and go? Do you realize how happy this makes me? Is it true? Is it? Is it?
If we don’t try we’ll never know. At least I can find out how good I can be. I can have an answer at the end of the days, and have a hell of a good time with the process. -Desi Davila
Correct. You can run *easy* forever on just stored body fat alone. The main reason folks eat on ultras is because when running for 12 hours, just as when sitting at your desk for 12 hours, you get hungry.
A RA user ran 100 miles one day in May on almost nothing. He ran it in 13 hours too.
