You are probably right.  I love my Dodge truck, but apparently those workers that were let go a couple of years ago for drinking and smoking pot on the job have been reinstated.

--- My father had an early 80's Chrysler New Yorker...  All black and a fabulous looking car for the time.  ---He did however have the transmission replaced in it 8 times.  8!  (I'd have been done after the second time)....  But at least the 8-track player in it worked.  That thing was state of the art in those days!   --But I am biased to this day against certain brands. :-)

I can't talk too much though, I have always loved Nissans, they have always been rock solid cars for me.  I just bought the new design 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, fully loaded.   I had this vehicle for 6 weeks and 1,200 miles when the CVT Transmission went kaput.  -- I thought maybe I had pushed it too hard because I do drive with a very heavy foot, but a recall came out on them already for this very problem,   6 weeks on the streets, a brand new model of vehicle!  And a recall already!  I have it back now with a new tranny in it + loving it again.

(I am a foreign car guy!)

But yep, Ford Pinto.  (BOOM).  :-)  Followed closely by Chevy Astro Vans from the 80's and 90's which had a very high rate of catching on fire half way through the commute.   Every time I was watching COPS as a youth and they pulled up to a fire on the highway, yep, there it was, Chevy Astro, in flames. :-)

Another reason I am biased so heavily against buying a Chevy?  Their ridiculous commercials.!  "I Foooorgoooooooooooott how to put Gaaaaaaaaaaasssss in my Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr"    Lady Please!  Don't embarass yourself on national TV like that!  :-)

I have had bad luck with Fords and Nissans, but I suppose they all have lemons.  Both the transmission and engine went out in my Expedition before 80,000 miles!  The Nissan Sentra had a wheel bearing fail before 10,000 miles and the roof was made out of tinfoil.  It caved in with just a little bit of snow on it.

Funny...the BEST car we've ever owned was a '97 Ford Escort.  That thing was never in the shop for anything!  It was even more reliable than our '89 Honda Civic Si.

I've owned a couple accords in my youth... I could not kill them.   :-)    And I have known a lady at work who had a Civic with over 300,000 miles on it that ran like a champ.    Alot of it comes down to luck I think.  Some cars, regardless of brand, hit an issue from day one, while others will get 100K plus without any issue.   I had great luck, till recently. :-)

                    Hangin' with Hal!

I've always had luck with Ford trucks...practically drove my last 2 Rangers into the ground. 93 Ranger I sold with 325K miles, only problems I had with it were the AC compressor (which will eventually burn out when driven for years in East Texas) and 2 clutches (normal wear and tear item after 100K+ miles). 03 Ranger had 265K miles on it when I traded it in...had to replace the AC compressor (after several years in South Mississippi) and front locking hubs at 250K miles. I'll be happy if the F-150 I replaced it with is just as dependable.

My bff's DH works in concrete and only drives Ford trucks...drives the hell out of 'em!  I see a ton of ancient F-series trucks around here, so that seems promising.

But only 100k miles on a clutch?  That's something we've never replaced on any manual...even driving 'em into the ground!

In 1995, I bought a 1984 Ford Tempo with 30,000 miles for $800 that I drove for 5 years until I sold it to my father in law (who let his daughter drive it for another 5 years).  Timmy was a good car when they took her to the Bithlo junk yard (although some that drove him might argue how good he was).

                          Today, I own 3 cars.

Japanese: 2002 Toyota Camry -- purchased with 30,000 miles in 2004 that I still own that has 130,000 miles on it.  My son drives it.  Great car!

American: 2004 Ford Expedition -- purchased in 2006 with 30,000 miles that I still own that has 130,000 miles on it.  Great SUV!

German: 2005 Volkswagen Jetta -- purchased in 2010 with 110,000 miles that I still drive that has 140,000 miles on it.  Great commuter car!

(After the Tempo and before my Camry, I owned a crappy Saturn that had 60,000 miles on it before the transmission blew.... ugh.  Nothing specific against Chevy other than the fact that I did happen to have 1 bad experience with a car I owned)

Just like your body (for the runners, or your bike if you also bike), a car needs TLC.  They're designed to go a long time if you take care of them.  I'm hoping I don't buy another vehicle for another 2 or 3 years.

                          Feeling the growl again

I'm done with Ford after, rather than issuing a recall on my Contour for an ABS controller that was widely known to be faulty and give out frequently, they simply stopped making the part available so that when one went you were forced to either pilfer from a junk yard or take the car to the junk yard.  The factory undercoating was also shoddy compared to any other post-1980s car I've ever worked on.

Too many bad experiences with GM to detail...though my 1991 Sierra is still going at 206,000 miles (albeit no A/C and one window won't go down).  I suppose if I put more than 2K miles a year on it it would not have made it this long (it was already at 180K when I got it in 2003).

My wife's Jetta was such an expensive, maintenance-hungry, and poorly built car that we were happy to sell it at 110K when baby #3 mandated a minivan.  We both drive Hondas now.  We'll see how they go, other than the Jetta we drive vehicles until they are no longer economical to repair.

Honda seems to be the single brand that I never ever hear any significant criticisms of.  If I were to replace my Mazda 3 hatchback today it would either be with a Ford Focus hatch or a Honda Fit.  I love that the Honda Fit back seats can be reconfigured in such a way that one can fit a smaller road bike in sideways without taking off the front wheel.  I just wish a sunroof were an option with the Fit.  I really almost consider a sunroof/moonroof a must-have feature.

The new 2013 Pathfinder I bought has not only a sunroof, but a huge moonroof in the back section too.  Cool stuff.  And I am glad I'm finally in a place financially where I can afford these kinds of things!  That was not the case in the past.

-When I first came to Virginia Beach nearly 20 years ago, I was driving a very old (but reliable) 2,000.00 Honda Accord, and my wife was driving a 1,100.00 Bright Yellow Volkswagen Superbeetle, 1973 model.   ---To be quite honest, if I had room for a third car at my house, (you know, just something to drive every so often for fun), I would buy another 1970's era Volkswagen Superbeetle.  Perhaps a Red Convertible model. :-)
