It would be useful to have the option to turn off the emoticons for a post. Sometimes a link or reply will contain the right combination of characters that automatically get converted to a smiley face. In the case of a web link it causes it to fail.
example:

Nice bug! Although I'm not sure if those are valid characters in the URL to begin with. I can fix the underlying problem of the URL being broken, but might have to leave the formating problem as it is.

Here's another example: if you want to refer to a race time using xx as seconds it does this - 19
