I'm thinking about signing up for a cross country 5K to try something differant. Is my normal Sacomy running shoes ok for this or if you do a cross country race should you be running in trail type shoes?

You can geta way with regular shoes as long as the treading is okay, but you'll quickly want the correct footwear. Proper shoes make a big difference in XC and especially trail. An option is to drive small hex screws into an older pair of shoes, as long as you're not using them on asphalt or concrete. I did a trail race on Saturday and a few people just wore regular runners, they were slipping and sliding everywhere whereas my trail shoes never lost grip even in the hardest turns.
