I just saw it this morning, recorded on the DVR.

Sat there with my morning coffee, Kelly and I both screaming ourselves hoarse. Which annoyed the dogs, and made no sense anyway, since it was recorded.

That was just plain unbelievable. Lezak's performance was so far beyond anything else I've seen so far its just plain indescribable. There was no way - no way - he was going to come back for the team. Especially at the ripe old age of 32.

Amazing.

The fact that the French were trash-talking just made it sweeter.

My only complaint: the media obsession with Phelps. For that moment, at least, I really wanted to hear what Lezak had to say. Just Lezak. Those questions about Phelps quest for 8 golds just irked me after that race. They asked him 4 or 5 questions, then asked Lezak like two. Lezak just swam the fastest relay split in freakin' history and did something that should have been impossible. How about we focus on him?

Easily the performance of the Games so far. (Although the Brit's taking gold/bronze and edging out Katie Hoff in the the 400 free was pretty amazing, too).

It was a great race to watch. Smile

As for Hoff only winning silver, you know she'll never put her palm to the wall instead of her fingertips again.

He handled it really well though, I thought by deflecting it and bringing it back to his teammates.
I'll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure.

Absolutely. It's not his fault. It's the media. He handled it fine. He can't control what the media does. And I know the stupid media has to have two or three darlings to focus on every Olympics.

But what Lezak did was unimaginable. Historic. Basically impossible. That's what I wanted to hear about.

Modified yet again to add YouTube video. Listen to the announcer. It sounds like the 1980 Olympic hockey semis:

Unfortunately, the video is gone due to copyright conflicts.

From the article you listed: "Phelps swam a strong opening leg, setting an American record by touching in 47.51 seconds. Weber-Gale went even faster, going 47.02 and moving the Americans into the lead."

So that means that the American record was broken, set, and broken again 3 times in the span of about 3 minutes. That, my friends, is cool.

I have also been impressed with how this group in particular has handled themselves. Lezak invoked national pride in deciding to go for it when he briefly thought the race was out of reach. The team decided to "let their swimming speak" in response to the French trash-talking. Phelps keeps making a point of deflecting praise off to his team, and all seem conscious that there are people, perhaps even kids, watching them as possible role models.

All quite refreshing compared to many high profile athletes who normally get the major press, IMO. It certainly makes me want to watch more swimming!

me too!!! m sure my neighbors are tired of the screams coming from our house.

Phelps is a class act, no question!

I can't tear myself away from the Olympic coverage. I've watched more TV in the last 3 days, than I have in the last 3 months!

I don't know the facts but I am assuming the French "smash them" comment had something to do with the uterly embarasing Gary Hall Jr. of the USA who said the USA would smash the Aussies like guitars in a previous olympics leading to an Aussie mocking of the USA while on the medal stand playing air guitars.

While I commend Hall for speaking out against drug use in the sport he is such an embarrasing fool that I am so glad he is staying home. Seeing him show up in a Superman cape at the trials as god's gift to swimming was just too much.

Which leads me to say I am much impressed with what the USA did this time... just swim and win. Work harder, don't tell the world what you plan to do... do it. They were awesome. An amazing race that should be on a top 10 list of team events. I've loved watching a PBS show about a famous 50k (?) team ski race from about 1992 I think in Norway. This one is right there. Not as long of a race but a ton of drama packed into those few minutes.
