October 19 I am going to race an 8K. I ran the same race back in 2006. My goal is to PR. Here are some interesting numbers from my log:
2006 8k = 34:20 6:54 pace
3 month prior:
miles per week = 30.72
tempo pace (>165 bpm) = 7:17 pace, 42.32 total miles, 4.23 average miles
stamina workouts (>151 bpm) = 7:43 pace, 82.37 total miles, 4.34 average miles
endurance workouts ((<151 bpm) = 10:00 pace, 82.37 total miles, 4.34 average miles
average weight = 163.08
____________
10/19 same 8K = goal to PR
3 prior months:
miles per week = 34.69
tempo pace (>165 bpm) = 7:03 pace, 34.14 total miles, 3.1 average miles
stamina workouts (>151 bpm) = 7:34 pace, 57.74 total miles, 3.61 average miles
endurance workouts ((<151 bpm) = 9:48 pace, 134.16 total miles, 4.79 average miles
average weight = 167.38
I think I have a shot.
- I have almost averaged four miles per week more. I think that will help.
- My tempo and stamina paces have been a little quicker than a couple years ago. I have run fewer hard(ish) miles though, so that will be interesting to see if that has any impact.
- My endurance pace is quicker also, and have run more slow(ish) miles than in 2006. Again, I am curious to see the result of the 8K.
- I am disappointed in my weight. It is a little over four pounds higher. The number is an average weight over the three month period. I weighed 163 pounds after my run yesterday, so I am going in the right direction.
Those are some of the things I look at before a race. Does anyone else do stuff like that?

When I have a goal race, I train specifically for it and do the mileage and the workouts necessary for that race, so if you mean by looking over numbers like that 4 months in advance to plan what I'm going to do, then yes.
Are you in the maine track club? If so, there's still time to get a free registration to this race if you haven't already. You have to register by mail for that option, assuming you are running the only 8k that I know around here around that time.

I bet I am racing the 8K you are thinking about. It is in Brunswick. However, I am not in the maine track club, so had to pay for the registration.
