RA has had a certain organization and associated customs which the RA folks are used to. The main forum has been for general discussion about running, beneficial and of interest to everyone. Attempts to form long-standing “cliquish” threads on the main forum, dedicated to a certain group of runners, seems out of place to the native RA-er. RA has groups where people can gather to share discuss common special interests (trail runners, low heart rate trainers, masters, …), and similarly, it seems inappropriate to many native RA-ers to have threads in these groups which would be of interests to all runners (i.e., those discussion should be in the main forum).

I've only been here at RA for a little over a year - but that makes me feel like a veteran user. I totally agree with the above paragraph. And thats is why I became a die-hard RA fan instead of CR, which I actually joined about a month before I found RA. It's the tone and format of the postings - they all agree with me. And I would like it stay that way. Just my $0.02.

PRE - I agree with what you are saying completely.

I appreciate the responses, especially from those who are open to all of the new members and anything good they might bring with them. I can still see there is a lot of resistance to change (similar to my own resistance to ACTIVE at C/R).

You might want to ask Eric to take down the welcome sign. Just my $0.02. Wink

I don't get it. Why should Eric take down the welcome sign ? Am I missing something here ? It seems like people looking for an alternative to coolrunning or the new coolrunning site feel pretty welcomed here and have adjusted to the way this site works and operates. All some of us are saying is that we like things the way they are, that was why we chose to log here in the first place as opposed to CR. The way it works here so far is that people suggest new features in the proper forum, other people chime in whether they like it or not, and ultimately eric decides whether to implement it or not based on the responses and the feasibility of the requested feature.

Yes SurfN, but we (being who we are) are very welcoming of new folks, especially those in need, and despite our stress of last week (and any overly aggressive posts on our part, sorry LRN).

Hi Valerie

Welcome to RA.

I think its a bit of a shame that you've chosen to highlight the very few negative things that have been said - and in many cases taken things badly that were not intended to be negative at all (as the original author has already pointed out).

There are many positive things happening now as our two communities integrate. As an example today the name of the weight loss group was changed as a new member found the original name too negative. So Jiggly Joggers became RA Running for Weight Loss. We'll continue to try and find middle ground on all the places where we are different I'm sure. And yes hopefully over time it'll just be a group of runners - not RAers and CRers.

But right now - I'm not sure if you realise it but you are coming across a bit

Perhaps trying to make a more positive contribution to the community might bring about the changes and integration you are after? You could start by emailing Eric to ask him to take down the home page message - I'm sure if you explain what it is you don't like about it he'd be happy to oblige. Or maybe start a thread on suggestions to see if others agree with you?

Anyway - I hope in time you find this is a community you can be happy with. We're a pretty friendly bunch mostly - and are trying quite hard to adapt to meeting a lot of new people with their own social groups already formed. There are bound to be teething problems but I hope we can work through them and get RA back to being a happy place for everyone.

And that is why its confusing to me. I'm trying to figure out how we can be more welcoming without having to change the way this site works.

Online communities have cultures just like any other community. It would be difficult to assimilate into a culture without first trying to understand how it works.

As a fairly new member of RA myself, I have never felt resentment from the exiting members. In fact, just the opposite.

I think I understand what juststarted is saying. I wanted to post reply to Nicks statement but I didn't because I felt a little intimidated. But it is really my hangup, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, for the most part I feel as welcome here as I did at the old Pre Active Cool Running.

Agree! Big grin

In fact I agree with everyone from RA who posted. What matters is that we all unite with a common cause/goal. We lALL ove running, want to encourage new runners, support fellow runners through the ups and downs of the sport, and most importantly Learn from eachother. Sarcastic remarks exist on every site, But how we react to them it is what can make or break a community....JMHO.

Why does it matter? Because when your house burns to the ground and someone you never met offers to take you in and make space for your belongings it's kinda bad form to start rearranging the furniture the moment you walk in the door. I haven't been here long (and I've never spent much time on CR or any other running board) but Eric has obviously put a lot of time and effort into organizing this place, as has the whole community. Christ, the guy is manually converting logs for anyone who asks! It doesn't seem all that out of line for folks to be asking for a little common netiquette: lurk a bit, get to know folks, get to know how things are organized, etc. You know, fit in.

Now, let the onslaught of fury begin...

It's this kind of attitude that made CR a place I visited only a handful of times. I've read these forums up and down for about a week now and I'm just not seeing anyone looking to pick a fight with the new guys in the way you're implying there.

Anyway, the community and tools here have really helped get me excited about 2008. I hope the new year finds Running 101 with fewer of these kinds of threads because I'm likely going to need lots of help (with running, not messageboarding! sheesh.)

Yeah, I've never seen an onslaught of fury on RA. Not yet anyway.

Anyhoo. I liked about RA that we didn't have to walk on eggshells and that it was okay to laugh with (and yes sometimes at) each other because it was a relatively small group and everyone sort of knew each other and at the end of the day this isn't life and death, it's just a running site. I hope that doesn't change.

As someone who was essentially a lurker at CR and is new to RA, I have to applaud all the RA folks for being so decent in general. This kind of upheaval to a tight knit community is incredibly overwhelming, and you guys have done a very good job of adapting and being welcoming. I experienced a similar change on a non-running site I frequent, but it took a couple of months, not a matter of days. And some people dealt with it more poorly than you guys have.

Sure, people will be sarcastic from time to time. But show me a place where two people are having a conversation, in person or oinline, that is completely devoid of sarcasm. Smile Sarcasm is an important part of my daily nutrition, right up there with iron and fiber. Big grin
