What is everyone's favorite running (or working out) quote:

A few of my favorites are in my signature below:

"Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way... Turn." - Charles DeMar (Who knows what movie this is from????)

"If I am still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a board and knock me down, because that means I didn’t run hard enough." – Steve Jones

In the absence of talent there is no substitute for preparation. – John Bingham

The more consistent you are in your training, the less you must rely on a perfect training run every day. – Frank Shorter
"80% of success is showing up." ~ Woody Allen

"Go that way... really fast. If something gets in your way... turn." ~ Charles DeMar

Millions of them. If its recent, I'm clueless.

But if somebody tosses out cheesy 80s references, I'll probably have a guess. It helped that "Better Off Dead" has always been a favorite, and that I still repeat that line every time I go skiing. Or give somebody directions.

I love that movie. Or anything with John Cusack in it.

"I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy."

Let's see. I'll try to pick some of the less common ones.
If you know the authors, I'll be impressed. If you google it, I'll be less impressed.

"If it hurts, make it hurt more."

"Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop."

"Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economize it."

Act like a horse. Be dumb. Just run.

It is true that speed kills. In distance running, it kills anyone who does not have it.

"If people knew how hard I work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all."

“Distance doesn’t kill speed. Not doing speed kills speed."

"Many runners use science as an excuse to avoid doing that training they know they should do."

"Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm ___ ___________ ___."

"I risked--I went through the first half of the [10,000m] race just a second off my best 5000 time."

"Run like hell and get the agony over with."

"My jump was imperfect, my run-in was too short and my hands were too far back at takeoff. When I manage to iron out these faults, I am sure I can improve."

{this exchange is for Jake Knight "Don't be stupid, you can't do that."
"Yes I can, anything is possible."
"We told you that you couldn't do it."
"At least I tried, you bastards."}

"Restlessness is discontent—and discontent is the first necessity of progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man—and I will show you a failure."

It is one thing to praise discipline, and another to submit to it.

I have tried simply to write the best I can. Sometimes I have good luck and write better than I can.

.... and the new tag line at the end.

"Men, today we die a little." Emil Zatopek at the start of the Olympic Marathon
The two most influential quotes of my running career:

Pain is nothing compared to what it feels like to quit. --Unknown

Discipline is the key to success. --Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sergeant Phillip, MCRD Platoon 2049
Statistics are human beings with the tears wiped off. --Paul Brodeur
25 of my favorite running quotes are at http://mysite.verizon.net/jim2wr/id85.html.
"The Marathon race itself is the victory lap. The real marathon is the training you do to get there."

-pretty sure I found that one on here in the forums a while ago. Really liked it and how it's taped up on my wall as motivation

"Don't pay the price, enjoy the price"
keep running!
I almost forgot this one - something I read when I was training for my first marathon and I'll never forget it:

"Keep running. If you feel like crap, run faster. You won't feel any better but at least you'll be done sooner."

"80% of success is showing up." ~ Woody Allen

"Go that way... really fast. If something gets in your way... turn." ~ Charles DeMar

winners forget they're in a race, they just love to run.

From Percy Cerutty

Running: running: hear the beat!
Busting lungs and pounding feet.
Straining: gaining: 'til your done:
Or you have the race well-won.
Racing: Pacing: rather die:
Than give up or let them by.”
