Virginia - The New Snow Belt (Read 1256 times)

18+ inches the weekend before Christmas.

    12" last weekend

    6"-12+" this weekend

We had around 20" total for the past five years combined.  And now this.

All these storms are on the weekend just in time for my long runs.  I have Myrtle Beach in less than two weeks.  75% of my training this winter has been on a treadmill because of the weather and road conditions.  Will be interesting to say the least.

Listen. Yeah, it's gonna hurt some. That's the marathon business.

But here's the thing. When it starts to get intense, that's not time to panic. This is what you wanted to happen. It means that all the training, all the miles, all the wakeups, all the cold, all the wet, all the sleep-deprived days and all the shit you've done to yourself over the last 6 plus months is finally about to pay off. It means you've put yourself where you wanted to be. You've given yourself an opportunity that very few will ever have. You've given yourself a chance.

    Now finish it.

Well, I've been a little jealous that south central Pennsylvania is getting missed by most of that snow.

Now I'm watching Virginia weather because my first ultra is Feb 13 near Appomattox and I'm hoping the trails will be clear.  I guess I'll be looking at how to keep snow from soaking my feet and lower legs.

      Do not attempt.

Holiday Lake? You have to ford a stream so you're not going to keep your feet dry

        Enjoy!

Yep, Holiday Lake.  I was hoping the wetness would mostly drain off/squish out between crossings.  Oh well, is there a rating scale for HTFU points?

          Do not attempt.

When I ran it was 14°F at the start, but at least the mud was mostly frozen.

Roanoke Area?     That's where I am.  SOOOOO nice to get out and slog around the streets today.  Had to dodge dog doo along with the snow, though.  Why is it that people think that they don't have to pick up after their dogs when there's snow on the ground?   Ugh.  So, are you ready for the next go round we're looking for on Friday and Saturday?

Hope all you mid-Atlantic folks are enjoying some winter for the first time in eons.  Its good for you.  Builds character. Builds strong back shoveling the snow and breaking trail for morning runs. Embrace it. Relish it.  Harden your soft underbelly of tanned, soft, warm-weather-miss-america-winning beauty.

But do say "hello" to the snow for us, we miss it a bit up here.  Drop a note if you'd like to rent a snowplow or two.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

Maybe "a bit," but that's all!  It's so nice to run on bare streets and sidewalks!  I even ran on a path through the woods today without having to worry about ice. 20 degrees and no wind - perfect.

I think it is funny that I am originally from NH and now that I am living in VA it won't stop snowing.

                    Best Present Ever

The snow has mostly wreaked havoc with my work life. I've gotten in my runs, but it's taken approximately 450 emails a week to coordinate long runs with predicted snowfall/work needs/family issues/anticipated ice.  There are hordes planning long runs tomorrow to beat the Friday/Saturday snow. The upside is that last Saturday felt like a holiday -- I'd done my run on Friday, and for the first time in ages, I slept until 7 am  and made my kids pancakes on a Saturday.

I'm in NC and may I ask you to please take your snow back!! I played doge the ice spots on my run tonight. Wouldn't have been so hard if the dog hadn't been pushing me out of the way to make sure his paws didn't touch the ice...

Seriously, hat's off to you guys and gals who run in the snow all the time!

                        What does Tunis make?

                          yummmmm pancakes

And good thing more snow is due this weekend, to replenish our stocks....

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Yet another storm this weekend is expected to bypass Maine off to the south.  Aww!
i too have had enough with the snow.  it hasn't affected my running much aside from slowing the pace but man its rough trying to get to work some days.  if i were actually trying to be fast right now i'd be much grumpier about it.  and Hokiemamba, i feel you, snow doesn't magically make dog doo disappear.  you need Vapoorize for that.

                                Good luck w/ that treadmill.

I am so lucky to be in Orlando, but I MISS 4 seasons.

My mom is in Roanoke (home sweet home) and I bought her an airline ticket this morning, leaving tonight and arriving in Orlando at midnight. She was not looking forward to being snowed in, again. She'll be here for 10 days! The kids will be so excited when they find out!!
