Free Beer
Thought I would throw this in, the Illinois was $75 earlier, is now at $90 but goes to $100 on 2/28. Another event organized by runners; people from the LRS and some of the people from Marathon and Beyond.
Rocket City. Huntsville, Alabama. $60 last year. Flat, fast course.
No bands, no big city head aches. A runners marathon.

Basically... run!
Just ran Birch Bay yesterday here in WA. It was only $45 for the marathon, and was a small, friendly race. It's a beautiful course that would have been even nicer without the rain.
Consistently Slow
I hope it is a favorite http://www.musiccityhalfmarathon.com/Greenway Marathon.htm
Greenway marathon $30 Nashville,TN **March 24
Run until the trail runs out.
SCHEDULE 2016--
The pain that hurts the worse is the imagined pain. One of the most difficult arts of racing is learning to ignore the imagined pain and just live with the present pain (which is always bearable.) - Jeff

The Shamrock is $85 if you register early. I haven't run it yet, but have heard nothing but good things about it. I'm running the half this year and the full next year.

pancake flat, boring, windy, and all the hotels require a two night stay. went once, would never do it again.

There's a number of fat-asses where they're willing to let you do it free. And they give out extra mileage free too. To everybody.
And they don't make you wear a chip.
And lots of the time, they also don't make you run next to automobiles spewing exhaust.
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Runners run
There is a cheap ($40 - $70) trail marathon (most races also have shorter distances and a 50K) virtually every weekend in the Bay Area. Check out Coastal Trail Runs, Inside Trail or Pacific Coast Trail Runs. Most courses have loops and a lot of hills, but the scenery is absolutely incredible so you barely notice seeing the same view twice. Flawlessly executed events with great aid stations and volunteers.
Marathon: 2:48:49 (Boston 2014) - Half: 1:22:11 (Berkeley 2013)

Next: Big Sur Marathon - Blog: http://jbfinn.blogspot.com/
Richmond (VA) Marathon was $55 when I registered. The closer it gets, the price does go up. It's a fantastic race: very well-organized, great course, great weather usually...
If you have run the Maine Coast Marathon back in the '80s you can sing up for this year's race for $15:

jackfrost9p - how safe to run the paved two-lanes trail road at Mt.Diablo park when it is open to a regular traffic? Did you run it outside of running races? Thanks. [Sorry for off topic].
paces PRs - 5K - 5:48 / 10K - 6:05 / HM - 6:14 / FM - 6:26 per mile
To each their own, but i say flat = fast Plus I live here, so no hotel for me.
Flat does = fast.
The Myrtle Beach Marathon, http://www.active.com/running/myrtle-beach-sc/bi-lo-myrtle-beach-marathon-2014 , is only $65, and it is not only pancake flat, but long and straight. I just did the half and it provided some of the best conditions I have ever encountered. Hotels are cheap because it's the offseason, and the weather is usually ideal except for one fluke year when it snowed. The scenery is pretty ordinary, but if you are running hard, scenery is overrated, IMO.
Just another vote for both Green Mountain (GMM) and Baystate. Two very different flavors, but both are races for runners, by runners at their core, and worth every $.
+1 for GMM. And if you're under 20 you can chase my age group record (2:53), though it looks like they may have changed the course.
