I ran the See Jane Run 5k in Alameda, CA this morning (Alameda is an island off the coast of Oakland,
a little village in the Bay). I ran the same race last year (the last time I raced a 5k), coming in at 32:11. This year? 27:18. What a difference a year makes! Sometimes us C25kers just keep going.
It's a women-only race put on by a local women's running store, See Jane Run, and benefits a local Girls, Inc. I signed up despite misgivings, because last year's race, which was the inaugural race, was so poorly organized. (how poorly? They mismarked the HM, and had people run 11.7. Can you imagine?) Anyway, they do seem to have learned from their mistakes, and this year's race showed a lot more infrastructure, and things went smoothly. Last year's started a half hour late, but this year's started right on time. There also appeared to be a lot more runners this year, which was nice, so kudos to them for having worked out the kinks.
As I said, there's a half marathon as well, and it starts a half hour before the 5k. Both courses go along the shoreline pretty much the whole way, in an out-and-back, so it's flat flat flat. And a little windy. Funny how you don't notice the wind when it's at your back. Then you turn around, and, hey, where'd that come from? The weather was typical summer morning on the Bay: cloudy and low 60s. Perfect!
I had hoped to come it at sub-30, that was my goal. I was at 8:54 at mile one (wind at my back, even if I didn't know it), but I didn't take note at either of the mile markers after that. I must have kept that up pretty steady though, since my time came in at an 8:48 pace. I never run at that pace! It's interesting, because the advice is always for slow easy miles, and I think that's sometimes hard to hear, or believe that slow steady miles could make you faster. But goodness knows I haven't really done anything but slow easy miles, and here I am clocking in at this pace. Pretty cool.
And, did I mention the schwag? A tech t-shirt, and a reusable grocery tote as the goodie bag. And chocolate and champagne in the post-race, in addition to the usual bagels, bananas, etc. I'll sign up again next year, without misgivings. Maybe even for the HM . . . .

Wow, Anne...that is OUTSTANDING! 5 minutes in only a year?! Damn!
What a nice race, too. Tech shirt...chocolate...champagne?!
I also had a 5k PR (waiting for official results before I log it and post my own report), but my PR was only ~2 minutes...and that is 1.5 years since my last 5k. Today's race was ~3.5 minutes faster than my first 5k.
I think you should definitely shoot for the HM next year--I'll bet you do it in under 2 hours, too!

Thanks! You know, I somehow missed out on the champagne -- I saw others with it, but I missed it. I definitely didn't miss the chocolate though.

Champagne...meh. It always goes to my head fast and makes my tummy feel kinda yucko (I think it's too fizzy). Chocolate, though...way to replenish the carbs lost racing.
