Hello everyone ! I'm new here just found this forum searching labral tears and running. My story sounds quite similar to all of yours. I started running to get in shape about 6 years ago. May 2013 I decided to train for my first marathon. Right away I started feeling pain in my right groin and down the front of my leg. I would feel it with the first step of my run, soon it became hard to run threw. I thought I just over did it and decided to hold off on the marathon until next year. I stopped running for a few months and focussed on strength. I continued to have right Si joint pain and would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night because my Si joint would get stuck and I couldn't move. I started to get back into running very gradually. About a month into it the right groin pain started again. This time worse than last time. I went to a sports doc and she thought I had a stress fracture so I got an mri which came back with no fracture but tendinitis and a focal articular cartilage defect. She recommended PT and it seemed to help a lot. I trained for and ran the marathon in October. The pain never seemed to go away but was ok for me to run with. Two weeks after the marathon I went for a run and I was in excruciating pain. I couldn't run or even lift my leg to put my pants on. Since then I went back to a ortho doctor who I know from work. I've been diagnosed with a superior and anterior labral detachment, small cam lesion and a pincer global overcoverage. My pain has gotten better but I can't run, walk far or stand for more than 15 minutes without some sort of pain (right Si or groin or leg). I'm in the process of being pre authorized for hip arthroscopy and I'm really nervous, I guess I just keep second guessing myself. Some days I don't feel too bad so it gets confusing. But I'm 28 years old and I want to try to have kids soon and my husband agrees if I'm gonna do something to fix this now is the time. Sorry for the long post! Just thought it might help talking to other people going threw the same thing. Anyone else have si issues ?

I didn't have any SI pain pre-op but I did have some post-op, I think from the traction.   Are they sure the pain is coming from the hip and not starting in the back?

That was one of my concerns. The hip specialist said since I don't have much flexion, due to the overcoverage, I am not able to bend over much without straining my back. At first I was ready to do a si injection, which he was willing to order for me, but the more I paid attention to my hip the more it made sense it wasn't just my back. I realized when I bend over I automatically bend to my left, if I force myself to bend over to the right my hip pinches and then pops. So I decided to save myself from another painful injection. I did have a diagnostic injection in my hip but it was so irritated I couldn't even straighten my leg, so it didn't prove much. When I got the injection for the mri, it did seem to feel better briefly.

I'm so frustrated. After waiting almost 2 hours past my appointment time to see the hip orthopedic doc (who would do the surgery), the doc informs me that my insurance company (Anthem) would take 2-4 weeks to decide if they will approve surgery for my labral tear and they may not approve it. So still no surgery date and if they don't approve it, I will have to suffer through the pain indefinitely--until either the tear is worse or I need a hip replacement, or my insurance changes--who knows!

Ugh that is super frustrating! Dealing with insurance companies can be maddening. I'm so sorry.

I guess if they don't approve the surgery, I'll opt for a cortisone injection and try to forget about it for a while. Too bad cortisone injections only work for me about 25-50% of the time.

stfuandrun, I hope your surgery on Weds goes well. I'll bet you're totally ready for that to be over with...

You can petition your insurance company.  Some have been successful in getting the surgery covered - your doctor will need to provide a letter or statement as to why it's necessary, I believe.

I'm in the process of getting pre authorized from my insurance now.... Is that how long it usually takes to find out? A couple weeks ?

I have Anthem and that is what they told me today--that it would take 2-4 weeks for Anthem to make a decision as to whether or not they'll cover the surgery.

I am so ready to get this surgery done and over with. Of course, my 12 year old kid is coughing with a sore throat and fever. I gave her a mask and she is quarantined to her room. I have washed my hands at least 400 times today. I absolutely cannot get sick. No. Way. I just have to survive through tomorrow.

I survived! Three suture anchors and the cam impingement was shaved down. He estimated the tear to be about 5cm, so pretty significant. I had a femoral block so my leg is a giant dead weight right now. Everything went smoothly and I was super happy withy the care I received.

Awesome! It's gotta be a relief to have that fixed and recovery started Smile I can't wait to join you! My husband and I are thinking about paying for the surgery out of pocket if Anthem refuses to cover it because waiting an extra 5-6 months to fix the tear(s) adds to the risk of making them worse and/or causing arthritis issues in the hip.
