Yay for my first thread at RA!

Anyway, my sister used to do a fair bit of running back in the day. She stopped due to some pains but would now like to get back into it. She has had some strange stuff going on (e.g., numbness in a leg and that). She went to see a podiatrist who told her that she should never run again after examining her feet.

She relayed this message to me and I thought it was strange. I had never heard of some sort of foot injury that would preclude all running. I'm still trying to get more details out of her but I'm curious if anyone knows what this might be. I would like to read up more about these "permanent" running injuries. I know she said she was developing some sort of burs but I thought those could be removed and running successfully resumed.

Thoughts? Anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks,
Joel

Hmmm, I would seek a second opinion, telling a runner that she must stop forever is pretty drastic. Numbness in the leg could be something serious, or not, but it certainly deserves further investigation. Advise her to visit s sportsmedicine specialist. Call specialty running stores (not the big chains, but the independent stores), a local track/running club, or even a college track coach, and ask which doctors they recommend.
Let us know how it goes!

Interesting read -- thanks for the link. Don't get me started on doctors and how they caused some prolonged grief with my Mom's cancer!

My sister has been looking at different docs but she teaches elementary school and her insurance is pretty crappy. I would love for her to visit my chiro and perhaps do some active release stuff.

I did find out that she is going to a physical therapist and they are apparently working on sciatica issues. I'm guessing that has no relation to the "no running because of your feet" thing.

She also mentioned she has spurs but I didn't think they were something that permanently prevented running. The body is a mystery!
