if I have the HR strap for the 305, can I buy the 405 with out the HR monitor and use my old strap?

You might want to check - the HR monitors are supposed to be "coded" to your watch so that you don't read someone else's HR when running next to them.
Are you sure about that? I am not saying you're wrong, but I would have assumed there was a difference in the wrist piece????
I guess I'm asking if the HR strap for the 305 and 405 are identical.
I have a suggestion: Call Garmin
So the extra $50 I paid for my 405 was for the HRM strap? And the wrist piece is the same no matter what?
I am 100% positive. From Garmin: yes, the 405 is compatible with the heart rate monitor strap from the 305. You simply "pair" the HR strap with the 405 (it's a simple menu operation to complete the pairing step). That's the beauty of ANT+Sport technology -- interconnectivity with multiple compatible devices. Same goes for the speed/cadence sensor for use on a bike and the foot pod, for use indoors.
