I thought I was bad...perhaps I'm not the gear whore I pride myself to be. A lot of my stuff right now is related to staying warm. Layering sucks ass.

I just had to move my running clothes to a larger drawer because the old one was too stuffed. I see running gear in the store and I ... just ... can't ... help ... myself.
I do have to get rid of some of those old shoes, though.

Can't help you on why they're called tops.
To the original question: I only see a watch problem.
Two 'early generation' tech T shirts that just aren't cool anymore. Kinda itchy, too.
Three shorts in various shades of silver/gray, one with the liner barely hanging in.
An ugly multicolored short my wife would love for me to get rid of. You can only wear it with black or white shirts - and even that's hard.
An ugly royal/sky blue short with a 'graph paper' pattern. May have once been in style.
(At least two of these will be gone today. Some are OK under pants. All are at least 10 years old.)
Three newer Adidas longer style shorts with a pocket in the back. These are great shorts.
A bunch of short and long sleeve new tech shirts. Like 10 or 12 maybe? I buy them only on sale. None was more than $15 and all are Nike, Adidas, Asiics, etc.
Two tech finisher shirts from races.
Two "track style" running pants, one of which has its version of Goretex peeling.
One winter waterproof jacket. Shhhh - It's actually a Reebok golf jacket . Was on sale $100 to $23 and it fits well and is pretty breathable.
Several tights.
Various fleece tops.
A batallion of socks.
Two Camelbaks (one 70 oz and a 40 oz [this as a gift])
A flock of waterbottles (just got one at a race this weekend.)
Headlight
Blinky light
Two baseball style tech running hats. Various ear/head warmer thingys.
Couple gloves.
Shoes: New NBs I haven't put into rotation because it's too crappy outside; Nikes about 2/3 into life span; couple years old Asiics DS trainers which are probably shot, but I still run in sometimes; Solomon trail shoes, Adidas racing flats. Two other old shoes I have to get rid of.
I try to make my stuff double duty: I bike and hike and wear the tech shirts as base layers for many activities. The shirts are great for fishing in hot weather. Also, having a bunch of stuff cuts down on laundry loads. I do one weekly load of running stuff (in the winter.)

The worst is when all your running bras are dirty. You're on your way out, and have no choice. Wear a dirty one... yum.. Hey, it's better than used undies!

I don't have a lot of running gear - shoes, 2 pairs of pants, and one body armor shirt.
But you guys don't know gear until you start collecting hiking gear. I've got an entire room full.
And part of the garage, where I store the tents. Yes, plural. You never know when you might need an all-mesh tent for hot summer nights, a 3-person when an extra person tags along, or the 3-season tent. And now I'm thinking of getting a bivy...

No kidding! I've got a 'few' backpacks, a 'few' daypacks, 2 stoves (alcohol and white gas), synthetic and down sleeping bags, winter socks, summer socks, winter wear, summer wear, stuff sacks, bear canisters/bags, and then we get into the whole car camping category where weight is of no concern.
Fortunately, I've found that a lot of my hiking clothing works well for running, especially the shirts, hat and gloves. I'm using a cheap pair of fleece pants from Target and a 10+ year old HRM that's still functional, so I'm still trying to keep it cheap. I've really only purchased a softshell jacket, shoes, and some thin coolmax socks and I can probably use all, even the shoes, for dayhikes.
Have you got a flag?

Okay all you gear hogs I need help! I have the following:
6 bras
2 shorts (I hate them)
2 running shirts
tons of socks
1 pair of shoes
an amphipod
a stick
ipod w/ nike plus
and a cheap sigma HR monitor w/ strap
what I need is:
shorts that don't ride up or bunch at the crotch
more shirts
and a new pair of shoes
and to know what kind of underwear to run in!
We do not have any running stores in my area- but I am heading over to the big city of Honolulu this weekend for the Aloha run (maybe I'll see you over there Mike!) and am planning on hitting the running stores. I know I am going to get a new pair of shoes when I am over there, but I'm open to anything and everything else you may suggest!

Mike--
How are things in Paradise?! I've always wanted to visit HI, but the closest I've ever been is watching Magnum, PI reruns. I'm an old Navy brat, my father was a submariner for a time. And I'm a total submarine and WWII nut. Visited several old boats and the last diesel-electric boat to be decommissioned (USS Blueback). Dumb question: how do run on a sub? Seems a bit cramped, but then I don't know what modern boats are really like. BTW congratulations on your first-born!
Paul
Things are great. I got a sun burn today in Waimea bay watching some crazy ass surfers braving the 15+ foot waves. Nuts.
Running on subs now is pretty decent actually... if you don't mind treadmills. I don't like them at all, but if that's all you got for months and months, you'll use it. My last boat had two of them, and with a crew of only a little over 100, you rarely had trouble scheduling time on one.
You're in france? I lived there for 5 years. Loved every second of it!
Sorry to get off topic, so now, BACK TO THE GEAR ADDICTS!!!!!!

i was attracted to running because the simplicity appealed to the hippy monk in me
but!
it is hard not to get sucked into the gear thing.
the thing i loved about your post was the eight pairs of shoes, i can't throw mine away either, there is nothing more comfortable than an old pair of running shoes.
sometimes, if you wear suits for too long, it changes your ideology (joe slovo)
The race for excellence has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

undies? nobody told me ANYTHING about undies...
EXACTLY.
I have 11 summer running "outfits" (if you saw them you'd ROFL that I even attempt to call them outfits)
and 6 winter ones. Since I like to get up and go right out the door, I put together my crazy combos and I keep them all folded up together in the drawer. That's why they're an "outfit." Wake up, grab an outfit, dress, get on the road!
Why so many in the summer? I'm not so good about doing wash -- I get done my run and go to the beach with the kids mostly. Chores take a back seat.
GOALS:
Run 1000 miles in 2009.
Run an 18 mile race in 2009.
