How could I possibly need this much running gear????? Do i need help? (Read 804 times)

You inspired me to count:
11 pairs of split shorts
3 pairs of sprinter shorts
3 pairs of tights
3 pairs of running pants
2 windbreakers
1 rain jacket
1 reflective jacket for night running
2 softshells
2 team warmup suits
8 singlets
6 technical tees
6 long sleeve tees
3 quarter zips (various weights)
9 pairs of running shoes
4 pairs of spikes
11 pairs of socks
various accessories (gloves, hats, headbands, sunglasses)
1 Ironman watch
What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles, Miles of Trials. How could they be expected to understand that? -John Parker

No kidding! I've got a 'few' backpacks, a 'few' daypacks, 2 stoves (alcohol and white gas), synthetic and down sleeping bags, winter socks, summer socks, winter wear, summer wear, stuff sacks, bear canisters/bags, and then we get into the whole car camping category where weight is of no concern.
Fortunately, I've found that a lot of my hiking clothing works well for running, especially the shirts, hat and gloves. I'm using a cheap pair of fleece pants from Target and a 10+ year old HRM that's still functional, so I'm still trying to keep it cheap. I've really only purchased a softshell jacket, shoes, and some thin coolmax socks and I can probably use all, even the shoes, for dayhikes.
Good, so I'm not the only one!!! I also have a synthetic and a down bag, 2 backpacks, 2 daypacks... even my 5-year old has 2 daypacks. One that is water bladder compatible, one isn't.
I don't have a bear canister, though, but I do have an ursack!! And car camping gear? Oy. That's the garage, and my husband keeps track of that gear (and the 4th tent in our collection...).

Okay all you gear hogs I need help! I have the following:
what I need is:
shorts that don't ride up or bunch at the crotch
I'd recommend you try a skirt. I have several pairs of shorts that I like, but really they all ride up to a certain degree. Only the ones with compression shorts underneath partially stay down. Even then I still have to pull the compression shorts down occasionally. Don't have that problem with the skirts. I have one from target that is OK and the ones I really love are from runningskirts.com. Tons of cool colors too. IMO.

I guess I'm a little minimalist. Off the top of my head....
6-8 pairs shorts
1 pair Sporthills
2 pair tights
2 heavy longsleeve polypros
3 light longsleeve polypros
4 short sleeve synthetic shirts
1-2 pair current training shoes
2-3 pair current workout/racing flats
4-6 pair racing socks
2 hats
1 heavy vest
2 wind-resistant lightweight vests
3 pair gloves
2 blinky lights
1 Ironman watch
1 Garmin 201
1 HRM, lightly used
2 different styles face masks for cold weather
That's it... I've had most of this gear for 4 years or more. There's more ancillary junk that I rarely run in that takes up space but not much.
"Talent" is a cop-out for not wanting to try harder.

I'm not quite as minimalist as Jake, but I don't have much. Most of what I use is stuff that I already had before I started running. But, I've only been at this for about 9 months...
stuff I already had:
cheap jersey shorts
cheap T-shirts
whatever undershirt I wake up in
cheap zip hoody when it's cold enough
cotton socks
NB 616's
my wife's Timex Ironman
and the only three items bought specifically for running:
cheap HRM with similarly cheap (separate) data logger (I do kinda want a nicer one, but my wife just got me this one for Christmas)
reflective construction worker style vest for my 5AM jaunts
Living in the deep south, I avoid the inconvenient necessity of all those warm layers, which is nice.
I've not yet tried any tech fabrics, but I do kinda want to try some out, especially in the summer when I totally soak my running clothes. My hesitation is that all polyester clothes I've ever sweated in end up smelling like a small dead animal. I'd hate to buy a $20 shirt that I could only wear a few times before it started reeking.

what I have
3 pairs of shorts (one for each leg of Hood-to-Coast!)
2 pairs long running pants that actually fit
2 pairs old pants that have been designated as running pants
2 tanks - both from races
5 shortsleeve tech shirts (4 bought, 1 from a race)
4 longsleeve tech shirts (1 bought, 3 from races)
various cotton race t's that dont get used for running, but fill my drawers
2 running baseball hats
1 wintery hat (also used for not running)
1 thin gaiter (pilfered from dh's biking stash)
fleece gaiter that is actually ski gear unless it is cold enough
a set of earmuffs that give me a headache so I never wear them
fleece vest and fleece jacket - both race goodies
waterproof/windbreaker - pilfered from dh's biking stash
3-4 pairs thin glove liners -pilfered from work
about 15 pairs cheap coolmax socks from costco, about 6 pairs "real running socks"
about 6 sportsbras in rotation although probably only 4 "good ones" - these are consumables like shoes
6 pairs of shoes in various degrees of "assignment"
garmin 301
camelbak
road-id
reflective vest (HTC requirement)
headlamp (HTC requirement)
475 or so ponytail holders of which I can only ever locate 2 or 3 at any given moment
3 tubes blistex for lips of which I can never locate any when I need them
2 sticks bodyglide which get used for "deoderant" accidently more often than for lube
single jogging stroller
double jogging stroller
3-4 pairs sunglasses, mostly destroyed by ds
enough gu and kashi bars to survive a flood
several icepacks & other medical stuff...but they are used for more than just running
ETA
Foam roller for rolling out calves, foam 1/2 roller for stretching calves.

For running when it is cold, try a layer with an icebreaker wool shirt.
These are awesome! Easy to wash and DO NOT SMELL - but a bit pricey...

I saw a very funny post recently about how much running gear we just had to have..........
2 dri fit caps
4 other caps too heavy to run in
When I read this, I said to my wife," If I ever get that bad, just shoot me"
. You have caps too heavy to run in?

When I saw this quoted by JeffGoBlue, it reminded me about one of my runs back in September. I had just begun to run along the lake. When up ahead I noticed an aquaintance, "Hi Pete" I called out. "Hey Hi" Pete replied. Just as I was passing him Pete called out "Hey, I'll run with ya for awhile". As we ran I asked Pete if he was a runner. "No" he replied, " but as you know I play Tennis and ski and I do like to walk down here." Well about 30 minutes later we finished the 5k route. I did say Pete was a nonrunner. Did I mention Pete was 71, did I mention he was barefoot.........talk about a humbling experience!!

I have a few questions, mostly about products I've never heard of, but also:
Bear canisters? How hard core do you need to be to get a bear in a canister?. I am NEVER messing with you!
Seriously, what is...
a zinglet? (NateFromRI)
3 quarter zips? (MrRedFern)
roll of duct tape? (RacingThoughts) I know what duct tape is. I just don't know how to use it in running.
And, finally, dnice, I gotta ask. Do you actually have more running gear than you can shake The Stick at?
