in a fun run, where we all essentially finished at the same time. Big grin

But seriously, I've never met in real life, a running great, or anyone great really. (It's different in my reporting life, but there you can't fawn over people and ask for their autograph.)

Was cool to meet him (not a big stretcher, by the way.) I'd not known a heck of a lot about him, but when I heard my running store/club arranged for him to run w/ us, I decided to bone up.

Guy's got an amazing story. I introduced myself by saying we shared a few things in common: neither of us were good on our HS cross country teams and we both had some serious injuries.

He autographed his book, "Staying the Course," for me. Then, the club gave us tech shirts w/ sayings (mine says: Only think of two things . The gun . And the tape . When you hear one . Run like hell . Until you break the other) on them as freebies and I asked if he wouldn't mind signing that, too. Then I asked, um, would you mind writing four letters to whatever you write?

So, my shirt also says:

HTFU

Yeah. That's cool. I thought you'd all appreciate the HTFU.
Oh, and Trent: I invited him to the Monkey. Didn't get a commitment, but he recalled the race in the park you mentioned to me.

It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack.

Dick is a super nice guy, and if you ever get the chance to hear him speak, it's worth going.

Last year, I ran the Lewis and Clark Marathon (Missouri version). Dick and Dean K were there. Afterwards, both had booths for autographs.

Dean's line was a mile long. Lots of people posing for pictures with Dean's calves, for example.

Dick had no line. He was just sitting there munching canteloupe.

It was a sad day for me.

Well, Dick's "day" as "we" have come to define success/popularity/"it" may have passed (or ebbed, perhaps more accurately) but so, too, will K's. It's the nature of time. K is running now; Dick ran then - before some running now were even born. Just the way it is. And running is such a unique sport: anyone can do it, without having any knowledge of what elites may be doing, so someone doing it now may have no historical frame of reference. Tell me that's the same of say, rec football/baseball. I bet 99% of those rec players know who's who in their favority team. Present and probably past.

Dick told me he does like 200 speaking engagements a year, so perhaps you caught him on a slow day. Somehow, I don't think he's hurting: He runs and he fishes. I repeat: He runs. And he fishes. Gets paid to do what we have to fit into our work. Come to think of it, I hate him. Big grin

I think posing with Trent's calves would be more impressive, personally. Big grin

I did indeed catch him at a slow time... sitting in a booth after a race next to the current PT Barnum of running.

Your points above are very sound, and I agree. I think you kind of missed my point. I never said he was hurting, and I never said that he was having an "off" day in the sense that he was at a low point. I was merely pointing out for folks who have never had the opportunity to listen to Dick speak... *totally* worth it. And relaying personal sadness for the whole Dean=1,000 Dick=0 moment in time. It wasn't so much about the fact that Dean was feeling the love... good for him on that... it was just a bit sad to me.

FTR, I've met Dick a few times. He's an official Maniac (maniac #133).

I know you didn't say he was hurting or on an off day. I was going off what I read and felt I was picking up a thread, more than responding directly to you. Carry on. Smile
