We've Got Big Hills
I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.
Poor baby
It is the Pemaquid Point Light in Bristol, Maine. If you've seen the Maine version of the state quarters, this is the lighthouse on it. It is a spectacular place, we're fortunate to have the private organizations that preserve and maintain the old lights such as this. A few more photos:
Note the folks up in the light, it is open for public access some days:
Interior as you head up the light, looking over the point. Little building in lower right is the fog horn shack:
Climbing the stairs to the light, as keepers have done since 1830 to keep the light filled with oil:
Looking south from inside the lighthouse tower, over the grounds and out to sea to Sequin Island and Small Point. (About 60 miles south of here you'll find MikeyMike in a kayak circling Nubble light):

What does Tunis make?
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Is that near Bar Harbor/Acadia? I can't tell if its the same one I have a pic on my wall of...I took my shot from the rocks below that would be directly opposite from the angle you are on the avatar shot.
Beautiful country up there.
Roads were made for journeys...
No offense.
Nice, thanks. I shoot lighthouses when I can convince my family to let me detour on vacations...
I'm pretty sure that if they are still active and managed by the Coast Guard that this is a felony.
Ultima tastes like failure.

I took my family to see it in July. Poor cell phone reception in that area, but they have a rusty old pay phone by the entrance booth, in case anyone needs it. My dad, a Type A guy to the max, kept grumbling about the lack of coverage. I told him that's why people go to that part of Maine, to get away!
Do they actually still run it on oil? From the ones I've been to, it seems like the trend is to convert them over to electricity.
No, didn't mean to imply that. It was converted to electricity long ago. Then fully automated at some point when the Coast Guard got out of the business of having light keepers. Then this one was actually retired from active use and is now maintained by a preservation group.
South Bristol is in the "mid-coast" area of Maine, south of the Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. "Near"...yes, 100 miles by car, 50 miles by boat, but worlds away.

Does that run on oil?
